OK, so I thought I'd post this -mostly for
candy_belle and
burgandybaby, but I thought there might other people on here who might enjoy it :)
It's a small excerpt from the Bandom/Wrestling wing!fic I'm apparently writing.
“I was a penance to my parents,” Pete said with a shrug; the words were casual, but Chris saw the familiar way Patrick bumped his shoulder and the grateful smile that Pete shot him. “My family’s Catholic -like, hardcore Catholic, going back generations. They’re big believers in being punished for breaking the rules.
“From what I was able to gather, my dad cheated on my mom when she was pregnant with me; she got mad, kicked him out and then promptly went and fucked his best friend. They ended up back together -divorce is a huge no-no and Catholics are big fans of sweeping something under the rug and then pretending it never happened- and things were fine for a few months until I was born.
“It was obvious how ‘different’ I was from the beginning,” a self-deprecating smirk twisted Pete’s lip and his gaze seemed to turn inward. “They thought, at first, that I was part angel -but my wings are black and who ever heard of an angel with black wings?”
The words were bitter and Chris felt a sudden rush of empathy for the other man. Patrick pressed his leg against Pete’s and dipped his head down to say something; the words were too low for Chris to make them out but Pete let out a harsh breath and buried his head in Patrick’s neck.
Patrick patted his back, glaring defiantly at Chris and Alex despite the blush coloring his face. Alex looked thoughtful and nodded slowly, as if confirming something to himself.
“They knew then that I was their punishment for the way they acted,” Pete went on after a minute, his voice back to normal; he stayed close to Patrick’s side, though, and seemed to draw comfort from him. “Their penance was to raise me to be a good, God-fearing person despite my origin. If they managed to do that, they would know that they were forgiven.
“And they never let me forget it.”
