This week has been nice because I only had fieldwork on Monday. Dr. Donahue is gone Tues-Fri for a conference and I can only see patients when he is there because of how the billing works. So Tuesday and Wednesday I got to observe eye surgeries at the Andersen Surgery Center. Last Tuesday I saw a cornea transplant surgery. That was amazing! The majority of the surgery involved the stitches which was very time consuming, but they are also a crucial component in order for the patient to see correctly.
This past Tues I observed a cataract surgery. Basically the cataract is broken apart and vacuumed out of the eye. I also saw a chelation surgery. This is were calcium has grown over the cornea and blurred the patient's vision. They just put a solution called EDTA I believe on the eye that makes the calcium soft and she scraped it off with a scalpel.
Yesterday, (wed) I saw a vitrectomy surgery. The vitreous is sucked out of the eye and replaced with either air, a type of gas, or an oil. This patient had room air put in their eye. Normally, this is done if someone has a retinal detachment, macular edema, vitreous floaters, diabetic retinopathy, etc. I also saw a surgery where the patient had a vitrectomy perform over a month ago and had silicon oil put in. Now they are removing the oil because it's obstructing her vision and replacing it with air.

While Dr. Donahue is gone he wants me to make some site visits to inform people of our low vision program at Andersen's. Last week I filled envelopes with brochures and letters so this week he wants me to deliver as many as possible personally. Tuesday I went to 9 different places in Saginaw. Yesterday, I was suppose to wake up early and do some before the surgeries, but I slept in instead. So today I'm up early and I'm finishing up some more in Saginaw and I also have places to go in Midland. I'm hoping to get them all done today so I can have all day Friday for myself.
