Persef Portfolio Entry # 4: I'll Be There For You

"No man is an island."

It’s very easy for any person to define what a friend is. A friend is someone who you can lean on, someone who accepts you for who you are, someone whose interests are almost the same as yours, someone who encourages you throughout the way, someone who protects you and so many more. But the question is, is it easy to do all that for just one person? Is one willing enough to sacrifice so many things just to make that one person happy? Will someone you think is your best friend consider you as one too? These questions are some which are quite often pondered upon on by those who go aboard that one very risky cruise called “friendship”.

I have this friend of mine who I got to know way back Grade six. I never noticed how we got really close to each other but what’s important to me is we did. I’m very grateful that she became my friend, the closest one I probably ever got. I find that she’s a very unique individual because she’s one of the few people that you would find who could stay calm at any and I mean any situation. I find that people tend to abuse her kindness sometimes and I wonder at times if I do too. On my part, I was quite carefree about how I act around people. That was until I reached my 2nd year in high school. It was then that I realized that I get conscious to what people think of me. So, I decided to keep in check all my actions towards everyone else. But if there’s one thing I can’t seem to put into my control, it’s my moodiness. You may wonder why I mentioned this. It’s because this has everything to do with her being a wonderful friend. It was in my 3rd year that I noticed that my “barkada” was starting to ignore my existence but then I shrugged it off, thinking they were just busy and all. But it was a few months ago when I felt that my assumptions were true. It was during my retreat when I found out why. She told me why it happened. She told me that it was because of my moodiness. I knew back then that it might be the sole reason. So, I decided to change and she was the only one who noticed it because she told me that she knew me better than them. I was really touched at what she said. This proved to me that she’s indeed a friend who really cares about me and I’m very thankful for that. This is only one of the many reasons why I consider her as my closest friend.

After many experiences on this very complicated cruise, I eventually realized that a true friend isn’t just someone who flatters you at your achievements and the like. A true friend is someone who does an effort to change you for the better and isn’t afraid to tell you the awful truth about yourself. Lastly, a friend doesn’t need to try to be perfect. He/she just needs to be an anchor for that someone he really cares for-an anchor to reality.
