This weekend was odd, in terms of what I did versus how I came out of it feeling. I think I had a pretty good weekend -- I made homemade pizza on Friday night, hung out and played Rock Band on Friday and Saturday, and watched the game on Sunday. And yet I feel like the weekend was a bit of a loss. I think it was everything I watched on Sunday.
I watched the newest ep of BSG on Sunday morning/Saturday night, which was pretty much guaranteed to be a downer. And it was. BSG just makes me feel tired and worn out. It's good, don't get me wrong, but I think they occasionally are a bit too overwrought.
Then I watched the first episode of the second season of Rome. Rome's an excellent series, and I really enjoy it, but that episode had to do with all the fallout of the first season finale (Caesar's assassination), so there was a lot of gnashing of teeth and beating of breasts.
Next, it was A Simple Plan, which is based on a book by Scott Smith. Much as I like Scott Smith's stuff (he also did The Ruins), his outlook is pretty bleak, too. My impression is that, to Smith, once you make a bad decision, all decisions made subsequent to that ratchet you further and further toward your inevitable demise. Which is pretty damn depressing. I found myself drawing a lot of parallels between this movie and No Country For Old Men, except rather than some sinister outside force acting upon the protagonist, it's all internal strife.
Finally, I watched the Ravens game, and that pretty much finished me off.
Oh, and a couple things:
http://scienceblogs.com/bloggingtheorigin/ - An Evolutionary Biologist reads The Origin of Species for the first time.
“Life - the way it really is - is a battle not between Bad and Good but between Bad and Worse"
- Joseph Brodsky
The above quote is one I like, one I think is realistic, and is interesting to consider in relation to A Simple Plan.
