Unleash the Night Book Discussion

Sep 30, 2007 01:24

Between my birthday on Friday and bad rains yesterday, I didn't get the chance to post the discussion until now.

Yet another book where the main character isn't a Dark Hunter. We've seen the Arcadian point of view, now we're seeing the Katagarian point of view. I believe we first met Wren, ironically, in Night Play, and we saw how diverse the outcasts of Sanctuary are.

To be honest I was a little afraid of Wren, simply because he seemed unpredictable, unapproachable and unstable. No one really knew just how strong physically he was and most of the others gave him a wide berth whenever he passed (except for the two idiot humans at the beginning). We got to see how very different the Katagaria are to the Arcadians. While Vane was intimidating, he was never downright scary, but Wren, let's just say that if I saw him heading my way, I'd turn and haul ass the other way, of course that would probably trigger his hunting instincts so I'd be screwed. I would definately avoid eye contact with him though. Sure, he's had a really tough life, being that he's a hybrid but that's not enough to make him, in my opinion, the most dangerous character so far. I mean, Wren could give Stryker a run for his money! Though, the difference is, Wren is not evil at heart, he's just protecting himself from everyone else. He has rarely known true kindness, as his father ignored him and his mother tried to kill him. At the end of the book, I'm not even sure he's changed for the better at all. He's still the same aggressive Wren only he's in love with Maggie.

I identified with Maggie so much. She's trapped in a life that was forced upon her, and her spirit is struggling to break free. How many of us are not the person we want to be because of our families' expectations? She's a down to earth young woman who is stuck in an upper class, snobbish circle and she feels empty and lonely.

This book didn't have any appearances from Acheron, I think it's the only book that he doesn't come out in, but his theory of everyone being connected and affected is most evident in this book. Wren and Maggie both knew Nick, he played pool with Wren and was Maggie's study partner, so before Wren and Maggie even knew eachother, they were connected through Nick. Julian Alexander is one of Maggie's instructors and Kyrian Hunter's best friend, Bill Laurens (Amanda and Tabitha's brother-in-law) is Wren's lawyer, Fang is Vane's brother, Vane is married to Bride who is friends with Tabitha. I could go on and on but I won't. So yeah, everyone's connected. Though you could logically trace everyone back to Kyrian, which I find very interesting.

Fang's shocking appearance at the end of Night Play had me curious, his appearance and apparent affection for Aimee has me dying for his story. Anyone else feel the same way?

At the end of Unleash the Night we get to see what's up with Nick, since the last time we saw him, he was, well, dead... Er, undead. Here we start seeing a change in him, he's not the same carefree, easygoing, friendly, smart mouthed kid from Night Pleasures. He's stoic, depressed and a little aloof. Though there was still enough of the old Nick in him to want to give Wren and Maggie a very special wedding gift and to ask Savitar if they would be happy (I particularly liked that though their firstborn is going to be a girl, Wren and Maggie will name her after Nick). It shows just how much of an impact he had on a lot of people. How the loss of one person can change the lives of many others.

Savitar. Anyone else feel like what he's done in the past, would make Acheron's past deeds look like field trips?
