You'd think a 60 year old woman wouldn't spend all day talking on the phone and on the Internet huh? Sorry this is so late.
Things just keep getting worse and worse for Acheron don't they? The Dark Hunters are now suspecting that their fearless leader isn't telling them the truth, or at least not all of the truth. Of course it doesn't help that Stryker and his henchmen are feeding those little seeds of doubt by taking the truth about Acheron and either twisting it or making it seem like the Dark Hunters had a right to know everything about him. Each book in the series keeps getting darker and darker and the "endings" aren't as happy anymore. Think about it, in Night Pleasures, the bad guy dies, the good guy gets his soul back and marries the woman he loved. Compare that to the ending in Sins of the Night where one of the main characters dies and becomes a Shade... Sort of.
The prologue. What a way to open up a story huh? A Dark Hunter who has broken the oath he took by feeding and killing a human being and then giving her body (and soul) to the Daimons who were chasing her.
At first I had mixed feelings about Alexion. He truly confused the hell out of me. He can't feel any emotion, he knows he should but he can't. He makes the death of the young woman It's almost like he's two different people in one body, on the one hand he is Ias, the noble, caring man who became a Dark Hunter, and the next he is the Alexion, the right hand of Acheron, the hand of justice if you'd like to call him that. He's come to terms in a way, with what he is now and that he can't allow himself to feel emotions.
Now, because there is the threat of a Dark Hunter uprising, Alexion has to go to them and try and convince them that Acheron is not a Daimon, isn't with the enemy and truly does have their best interests at heart. I love what Alexion tells Danger about Ash:
"The Dark Hunters owe that man everything, and I do mean everything. He pays in blood every time one of you wants to go free, and he suffers every day so that you can all live your cushy little lives of wealth and privlege. And I have to say that every time one of you turns on him, it seriously pisses me off. Acheron asks nothing from any of you and that's exactly what he receives. When was the last time one of you even said thank you for his help?"
How many of you didn't even think about that? I surely didn't. Like the Dark Hunters I took what Acheron did for them for granted. He suffers for his Dark Hunters so that they could have the chance for happiness, and they don't even know it.
When I read what had happened to Alexion as a Dark Hunter and it did break my heart, I mean to find out that his wife didn't love him and that the children he thought were his weren't. I think that's what devastated Alexion the most, that his children belonged to another man. What a cold and cruel woman his wife must have been.
I thought Danger would be a tall, exotic, possibly African American or Amazon. Nope, she's a petite little French woman. Don't ask me why I thought that, I just did.
And just when I thought it there couldn't be anything as shocking as Nick's suicide, there's the appearance of Xirena, another Charonte demon. Up until now it was thought that Simi was the last Charonte demon. Now not only is there another Charonte demon in the picture, she happens to be Simi's biological sister! But wait, there's more! Simi's birth name was Xiamara and "simi" actually means "baby" in Charonte (everyone together now: Awwwwwwwwww).
It was nice to see the interaction between Xirena and Alexion, I particularly thought it was sweet of him to share some of his memories of Simi with her. It's also great to see that certain aspects of Simi's character are common to other Charonte demons, particularly the whole childlike behavior.
I thought it was rather touching when Xirena ask Alexion if she could bond with him:
"I only want to be with my family Alexion. Will you let me bond to you so that Xirena can't be forced back to Kalosis?"
Once she bonds herself to him though, I love the part where she (in the form of a tatoo), crawls up his chest and causes Alexion to jump:
"Xirena, stop moving!"
"Sorry, akri."
"Don't call me akri, Xirena. I'm not a control freak."
"You are good, quality people, Alexion. Xirena will sleep now."
And Xirena's right, Alexion has proven himself to be "good, quality people." He isn't as cruel as he'd probably like to be (It would be better for him to be that way though wouldn't it? His life has been unfair and he has been the only one to pay for the mistakes of others), and like Acheron, he can't and won't turn away from someone in trouble.
At one point Alexion is contacted by a soft feminine voice that he mistakes for Artemis, does anyone else think it was Katra? Or is it just me?
Danger's death shocked me a bit as well, but it had to happen so that she could stay with Alexion. I thought it was very noble and sweet of Acheron to bring her to live in his home when he despises having anyone in his home other than Simi and Alexion.
As for Simi adjusting to her sister? Priceless.
