Ian Somerhalder's Directorial Debut on VD! (My 6x16 Thoughts)

Alright so here is a jotted recap of the episode with my initial thoughts included throughout and after the episode. I do it this way because my memory sucks when it comes to recalling things that don't revolve around my OTP for the series.

Synopsis: IAN SOMERHALDER MAKES HIS DIRECTORIAL DEBUT - After shutting off her humanity following the death of her mother, Caroline (Candice Accola) gives her friends an unexpected ultimatum. Not knowing how to handle the new Caroline, Stefan’s (Paul Wesley) attempt to intervene sets off a dangerous chain of events, leaving him and Elena (Nina Dobrev) in a race against the clock. Meanwhile, after seeking answers from Kai (guest star Chris Wood) about the prison world, Damon’s (Ian Somerhalder) world is turned upside when he learns some devastating news about his mother Lily (guest star Annie Wersching). Elsewhere, Enzo (Michael Malarkey) finds himself becoming increasingly intrigued by Sarah Salvatore (guest star Tristan Mays), and Bonnie (Kat Graham) begins to struggle with the effects of being back in the real world.
Once again another plot device is reused...the humanity switch. Just like in 4x16 when we see the first glimpse of Emotionless-Elena, 6x16 introduces us to Emotionless-Caroline. I already I find this stupid. You'd think she'd learn from the fallout around Emotionless-Elena that this route is a definite no-no. For a vampire who claims to be so strong and so in control, she surely caved and took the easy way out when it came to her grief. And I usually like Caroline because of her vampire control and yet this decision just seemed like a cop-out for some reason.
Anyways, SO EXCITED ABOUT the Bonnie/Damon/Lily drama! I can't wait to see what Damon uncovers now that Bonnie returned and shared who she met in the colliding prison worlds.
Enzo/Sarah....I don't see the revelence in that at all. -_- I miss Enzo/Caroline.

- Bodies piled up she moved, killed some more until she had to move again. They think 3000 in total.
- For some reason my coven made it their duty to stop her.
- They cut her off in a New York harbor, before she could tear through Manhattan,
- granted by the time they made it to the ship they found everybody dead.
- It was so gruesome they had to burn it there in the harbor." -Kai
- Damon doesn't want to hear it
- Kai shows himself out
- Damon collapses
- I guess we know where Stefan's Ripper tendencies come from...their mother.
Girls' Dorm
- Bonnie leaves a message on Jeremy's cell
- Bonnie doesn't know how she feels about the new her
- Bonnie wants to figure that out before she sees him again
- I wasn't expecting to hear Jeremy's voice!
- Bonnie looks down at the healed arrow wound on her stomach
Whitmore Medical
- Elena rushes inside and uses her vampire hearing to find Liam
- Liam gags Sarah before he pulls out the drill
- Elena rushes to the basement
Bar / Whitmore Medical
- Caroline is bored watching Stefan
- Stefan flinches with the stake in his back
- Stefan's phone rings
- Caroline takes out the stake in Stefan's back
- Caroline answers and it's Elena explaining that she can't find Liam & Sarah
- Caroline wonders how long a person could live without a heart
- Stefan gets up and tells Elena that Caroline is going to have Sarah killed
- Elena can't find them in the empty lower level
- Stefan tells Elena to bring him back ("Bring me back.")
- Elena doesn't understand
- "Just remember to bring me back." -Stefan
- Elena shouts for Stefan to stop once she realizes that he's about to flip his switch
- Stefan shuts his humanity off
- Caroline is pleased and hangs up
- So does this mean that Stefan cares more for Sarah than Caroline?
- Elena rushes to find Sarah and Liam
- Elena feeds Sarah her blood
- Elena breaks Liam's wrists
- Elena calls Stefan and tells him the good news
- Music is blaring as Stefan drinks his cocktail without a care
- Elena demands for Stefan to tell her that he didn't turn his humanity off
- Stefan passes the phone to Caroline
- "He shut it off." -Caroline
CREDITS
For his directorial debut, I thought Ian Somerhalder did a fantastic job! There were different camera angles, different lighting vibes and even on Caroline, it seemed like she was filmed in the shadows a bit more. Her silhouette seemed to be used more and it definitely emphasized her new demeanor.
And Caroline made many points while emotionless. And she's got to be the smartest vampire that lives to her vampirism to the fullest. She eats her fill of blood yet keeps her victim alive and with no traces of her attack. Her calculating attitude made me think that she could rival an Original during one of their war plans (like from TO 2x01 against Francesca and her wolves).
Stefan's twist at the end was not what I expected. I know that it will blow up in Caroline's face though. I wonder how Damon is going to react to this new development.
And speaking of Damon...what a discovery he made about his mother. I definitely wasn't expecting that. I thought at worse that Lily would be similar to Kai (powerful witch threat that needed to be stopped) but to have it revealed that Lily is a Ripper and one that spent her 45 years of vampirism with a body count that totalled 3,000! What if Lily was the Original Ripper, the one that coined the term, and Stefan had unknowingly continued that legacy when he became one in the 1912...? Talk about following in your mother's footsteps. But now I wonder what would have happened if Damon had told Stefan about their mother being alive, would that cause Stefan to hesitate in turning his humanity off to save Sarah? Or will Damon use Lily somehow to get Stefan to turn his humanity back on?
And then there is Bonnie. I love her 'take no bullshit' attitude that she showed at the rave with that guy. And then when she faced Kai again and had all those memories flooding back to her, could Bonnie face some form of PTSD or something similar to that? It'll be interesting to see how she readjusts to her life and how her magic grows with it.

- Without her humanity, Caroline seems a lot more calculating in her actions....almost like one of the Originals in their war plans

- Bonnie wanders into a less crowded alleyway
- Bonnie is surprised to see Damon
- Damon tells Bonnie not to be mad at him
- Bonnie is confused
- Damon points Kai out to her
- Bonnie freezes
- Kai starts to apologize to Bonnie for all the hurtful things he did to her
- Bonnie gets flashes of all the dangerous things Kai has done to her

- Bonnie is in tears as she relays the events to Damon

- Stefan and Elena walk in and wonder where Sarah is
- Sarah is away...tied to a table with Liam compelled to perform surgery on her if Caroline says so
- Elena tries to relate her emotionless-kills to what Caroline will feel if she kills Sarah
- Caroline finds it hilarious that Elena is making the situation about her again
- I have to agree with Caroline there
- Stefan proposes to leave town and to leave Caroline alone
- Caroline points out that the current version of Stefan is the one she fell for so he's the one that could bring her back
- Caroline doesn't want to kill Sarah...she wants to change Stefan instead
- Caroline offers Stefan a cocktail as she gives him her ultimatium about Sarah
- "If Stefan wants to save Sarah's life then all he has to do is turn his humanity off." -Caroline
- Whoa! Will Stefan do it? Or will he pretend to shut his humanity off? I mean he already did it in season 3 because of Klaus.

- Kai tells Damon that only 2 Prison Worlds existed....1994 and 1903

- "Your mom's a Ripper, okay?!" -Kai
- I guess that's where Stefan gets his lack of blood control from...from his mom
- I wasn't expecting that
- Kai tells Damon that Lily turned in 1858, faked her death and went off the rails
- "She turned in 1858, faked her death, went to Europe where she went a little nuts.
- Bodies piled up she moved, killed some more until she had to move again. They think 3000 in total.
- For some reason my coven made it their duty to stop her.
- They cut her off in a New York harbor, before she could tear through Manhattan,
- granted by the time they made it to the ship they found everybody dead.
- It was so gruesome they had to burn it there in the harbor." -Kai
- Damon doesn't want to hear it
- Kai shows himself out
- Damon collapses
- I guess we know where Stefan's Ripper tendencies come from...their mother.
Girls' Dorm
- Bonnie leaves a message on Jeremy's cell
- Bonnie doesn't know how she feels about the new her
- Bonnie wants to figure that out before she sees him again
- I wasn't expecting to hear Jeremy's voice!
- Bonnie looks down at the healed arrow wound on her stomach
Whitmore Medical
- Elena rushes inside and uses her vampire hearing to find Liam
- Liam gags Sarah before he pulls out the drill
- Elena rushes to the basement
Bar / Whitmore Medical
- Caroline is bored watching Stefan
- Stefan flinches with the stake in his back
- Stefan's phone rings
- Caroline takes out the stake in Stefan's back
- Caroline answers and it's Elena explaining that she can't find Liam & Sarah
- Caroline wonders how long a person could live without a heart
- Stefan gets up and tells Elena that Caroline is going to have Sarah killed
- Elena can't find them in the empty lower level
- Stefan tells Elena to bring him back ("Bring me back.")
- Elena doesn't understand
- "Just remember to bring me back." -Stefan
- Elena shouts for Stefan to stop once she realizes that he's about to flip his switch
- Stefan shuts his humanity off
- Caroline is pleased and hangs up
- So does this mean that Stefan cares more for Sarah than Caroline?
- Elena rushes to find Sarah and Liam
- Elena feeds Sarah her blood
- Elena breaks Liam's wrists
- Elena calls Stefan and tells him the good news
- Music is blaring as Stefan drinks his cocktail without a care
- Elena demands for Stefan to tell her that he didn't turn his humanity off
- Stefan passes the phone to Caroline
- "He shut it off." -Caroline
CREDITS
For his directorial debut, I thought Ian Somerhalder did a fantastic job! There were different camera angles, different lighting vibes and even on Caroline, it seemed like she was filmed in the shadows a bit more. Her silhouette seemed to be used more and it definitely emphasized her new demeanor.
And Caroline made many points while emotionless. And she's got to be the smartest vampire that lives to her vampirism to the fullest. She eats her fill of blood yet keeps her victim alive and with no traces of her attack. Her calculating attitude made me think that she could rival an Original during one of their war plans (like from TO 2x01 against Francesca and her wolves).
Stefan's twist at the end was not what I expected. I know that it will blow up in Caroline's face though. I wonder how Damon is going to react to this new development.
And speaking of Damon...what a discovery he made about his mother. I definitely wasn't expecting that. I thought at worse that Lily would be similar to Kai (powerful witch threat that needed to be stopped) but to have it revealed that Lily is a Ripper and one that spent her 45 years of vampirism with a body count that totalled 3,000! What if Lily was the Original Ripper, the one that coined the term, and Stefan had unknowingly continued that legacy when he became one in the 1912...? Talk about following in your mother's footsteps. But now I wonder what would have happened if Damon had told Stefan about their mother being alive, would that cause Stefan to hesitate in turning his humanity off to save Sarah? Or will Damon use Lily somehow to get Stefan to turn his humanity back on?
And then there is Bonnie. I love her 'take no bullshit' attitude that she showed at the rave with that guy. And then when she faced Kai again and had all those memories flooding back to her, could Bonnie face some form of PTSD or something similar to that? It'll be interesting to see how she readjusts to her life and how her magic grows with it.
