Prompt A Day: I Can't Hear You

Jan 12, 2009 01:42

I can't hear you as the rain drums softly on the windowpane and my thoughts scatter like so many thousand raindrops. Your face framed in the ethereal glow of a soft-lighted table lamp, the hair gleaming with hundreds of tiny crystal-beaded droplets from the storm outside.

I shake my head, getting rid of the languidly hazy fog and ask you to repeat yourself, "I'm sorry, what did you say?"

Smiling softly, you chuckle and tuck that stray hair that never seems to stay put behind my ear once again and gently caress my cheek.

With a sparkle in your jade-green eyes and a smile flitting across your lips, you scoot down in front of me and take my hands in yours. Almost a whisper, the words come out, "I asked you if you wanted to come outside with me. There's something I think you should see."

You know how much I love the rain. It doesn't matter the season or temperature. Every storm is a gift from the gods, and each one holds a special moment within my heart. Taking my hand in yours, you coax me out of the old wicker chair by the window and out the front door, only briefly pausing to grab a slicker for me.

As we dash out into the front yard, twirling in circles I can feel the exhilaration of the storm. Thunder breaks around us as the rain comes down in torrents. Lightning arcs across the sky and a crackling boom echoes around the valley surrounding us.

And as the rain pounds down around us, you stoop to one knee. Puzzled, I cock my head and gaze down through my tangled mess of brown hair as you shake the water out of your own.

You say something, but the wind and lashing rain tear it away before it can reach me. I shake my head and ask you to repeat yourself just as the wind quiets slightly.

"I said... Will you marry me?"

And just then, the tears mix with the rain and I find myself grinning like a madwoman as thunder shakes the valley, booming echoes resounding across the mountain range to our left.

I throw myself into your arms crying with happiness, never thinking this day would come, never envisioning it to have been this perfectly planned.

And just as you anchor me throughout this storm, I know you'll be an Anchor in Life, a Safe Haven of Solitude even in the most trying times...

"Yes," I whisper next to your ear. "Always and forever..."
