Speaking as a writer, I have no respect for anyone who writes any group as
Always Chaotic Evil (Warning: TV Tropes).
Before you ask:
Yes, I am including Tolkien in this one.
So when I run into shit such as: Nobility are evil, except the ones that pal around with commoners. Commoners are nice, except the ones that pal around with nobility.
I pretty much have to pause to side-eye the writer.
- It shows that the writer is pretty much an idiot.
- It shows that the writer has no idea how nobility even works.
- It shows that the writer doesn't stop to think about potential exceptions, such as:
- Commoners that get adopted into the nobility
- Commoners who marry into the nobility
- Illegitimate nobility, also known as bastards
- The children of a noble and a commoner who might have been raised on either side of the family line
- It shows that the writer doesn't consider the inherent contradiction in their own rule: if the noble is paling around with the commoners, that means that their commoner friends are evil!
- It is the oldest, cheapest writing trick in the book.
- It shows that the writer is pretty much an idiot.
It frustrates me.
