When Steve turned away from Kamekonas Shrimp truck, he found Danny sitting alone on the bench where he’d left him and Grace a few minutes ago. Now however she was nowhere to be seen. Without thinking too much of it, he grabbed the tray and went back to sit with his partner.
Only when he was a few feet away he could see the change in his demeanor. Broad shoulders stiff, a deep frown between his eyebrows; he was watching something in the distance with a dark look. Instead of getting worried, Steve felt a small smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. Curious to find out what had his partner irritated now, he closed the few steps between them.
“What are you glowering at?” he asked, putting the tray on the table, thumping down on the bench beside him.
“I’m not glowering. I’m observing.” Danny corrected without looking at Steve.
Steve cocked his head in light confusion but instead of asking Danny again what was wrong, he twisted in his seat and followed his gaze. The next moment a huge grin nearly split his face in two when he realized what exactly Danny was glowering at, and not it was totally clear that he was indeed glowering.
Off to the left, under one of the shady trees, stood Grace, leaning casually against the tree trunk. She was playing with the end of her long ponytail, a flirty smile on her beautiful face. Although Steve was pretty sure that the dark look Danny sent in her direction wasn’t meant for her, but for the guy leaning casually on his bike next to her. He was probably her age, maybe a bit older. He was a handsome kid with tanned skin, a mop of brown curls that he shook out of his dark green eyes every now and again and an equally flirty smile on his face.
“Who’s he?” Steve asked, picking up one of the shrimps, dipping it in Kamekonas latest sauce creation and munching happily on it.
“Don’t know. Some dude from her surfing class. Eric something. She’d just shrieked his name and off she went.” Danny snorted, his look getting darker, as surfer dude leaned a bit closer to Grace, saying something which made her giggle.
“She’s 14.” Steve reminded him with a smile. Danny was clearly overreacting, but Steve couldn’t help finding this protective streak of his partner adorable.
His comment caused Danny to tear his eyes away from the scene in front of him, instead gracing him now with a dark and sullen look, which left Steve utterly unimpressed and still smiling. “Thanks for reminding me, Captain Obvious.” He snapped, his eyes already back on the couple. Steve just shrugged his shoulders, grabbing another shrimp. “Don’t you remember how you’ve been with 14?”
If possible Danny’s look got even darker.
“Yes.”, he said through gritted teeth. “I remember. That’s exactly why I don’t like him.”
Suddenly Steve could picture it all too clearly. A younger version of the man sitting next to him, a bit small for his age, but still athletic with his wavy blond hair, breathtakingly blue eyes and brilliant smile; probably charming the pants off of half the neighborhood with his quick remarks and witty humor. And he remembered himself at the age of 14, and suddenly he didn’t felt like smiling anymore.
His gaze went back to the tree where the guy was just touching Graces arm, leaning in even a bit further to whisper something in her ear which made her blush and giggle even harder than before. His eyes narrowed and he was pretty sure that he was sporting an equally glowering gaze by now. But that didn't last long. A few seconds later he was smiling again shooting Danny a sideways look.
"Want me to go over and scare him a bit?" He asked conspiratorially.
Danny tore his eyes away from the tree, now watching his partner instead. A frown creasing his forehead but his gaze was a bit less sullen, his eyes lighting up at the idea, although he still seemed a bit unsure.
"She'll hate you."
"Nah." Steve waved a hand at him, as he stood, the brilliant smile now back on his handsome features. "She loves me. Besides I don't want to scare him away just you know... introduce myself. Maybe asking what his intentions are. Showing him my badge. Something like that." And with that he was off, strolling confidently towards the tree. Yes, Grace would probably hate him for a bit, but maybe one day she'll thank him. Yeah, probably not but the content look he could feel in his back was definitely worth it.
