December 18th - 1 week left.

“Heyyy, Ryu, what do you want for Christmas?” Hayato asked, running up besides his friend as they walked home after school.

“Nothing,” Ryu replied. “I don’t like Christmas that much.”

“Awww, why?” Hayato whined. “Are you just upset that no one ever gets you a present or something?”

Ryu stopped walking.

“Because if that’s the case then I’ll make up for it and buy you whatever you want! Anything! Well, as long as it doesn’t cost too much because you know I don’t have that much money, but still, anything! Reasonable at least.”

“Hayato?” Ryu interrupted Hayato’s rambling.

“Yes?”

“…Shut up.” Ryu started walking again.

Hayato pouted and followed, all the while trying to think of something to get Ryu for Christmas (which was difficult for him-thinking wasn’t exactly Hayato’s specialty, after all).

December 19th - 6 days left.

Ryu walked into class 3-D the next morning with a headache. Hayato just would not stop asking what Ryu wanted-“Really, if you don’t tell me, I’ll end up getting something you’ll hate!”-and it took him three hours before he was finally able to shut him up by saying two little words which would prove to have been a not-so-smart idea: “Surprise me.”

So now he was going to have to face whatever half-baked present idea Hayato would come up with (such little faith he had in the other).

He sat at his desk and was about to lay his head down and go to sleep when he noticed that there was a little box sitting on the corner of the desk. Ryu sighed and opened it anyway, almost half-expecting it to turn out to be some weird thing from Yankumi or something; for all he knew, it could have been.

Inside the box there was a silver bracelet. It was just a chain, and fit just a little too loose around Ryu’s wrist, but he could adjust that later. It was nice, and, looking back into the box again, he smiled just a tiny bit.

There was a piece of scrap paper stuffed into the box with a single initial scribbled on it.

‘H.’

Ryu put the bracelet on his left wrist and went to sleep.

December 20th - 5 days left.

Ryu was disappointed in the fact that Hayato had failed to show up in school the day before. He hadn’t gotten a chance to thank him for the present (even though he also wanted to tell Hayato that part of the point of getting someone a Christmas present was to give it to them on Christmas Day, but hey, this was Hayato, after all).

Walking over to his desk, he half expected to find another box laying there, but there was none to be found. Sighing quietly to himself, Ryu sat down and waited for Yankumi to show up.

A few minutes later, she did, walking up to her little teacher stand and taking attendance. Ryu noticed that Hayato didn’t answer when his name was called, but he figured the other boy could just be late or something.

“Oh, Odagiri-kun, this is for you,” Yankumi said, picking up an envelope and walking over to hand it to him. “Someone left it in the teacher’s room by mistake, I think.”

Ryu sighed and would have sweatdropped if he could; unmistakably it had to have been Hayato’s doing. He opened up the envelope and pulled out its contents.

It was a very small copy of a picture of himself and Hayato, in one of the rare moments that a camera was able to capture Ryu’s smile. Ryu remembered when the picture was taken: Hayato had jumped on Ryu’s back from behind and Ryu had laughed, noticing Take with the camera and holding up a peace sign.

The picture itself had a small silver frame with a clip at the top, like a keychain.

Ryu turned the envelope upside down to see if there was anything, but there wasn’t. he then turned it over and found written on the other side, “For the bracelet. H.”

Ryu made a small laughing noise in the back of his throat. What did Hayato think he was, a girl? Getting him a charm bracelet and charms for it too? Nevertheless, he attached the picture to his bracelet and wondered what the next day would bring.

December 21st - 4 days left.

Ryu noticed it taped to his front door when he left for school in the morning: a silver ‘R’ pendant, for the initial of his name. “For the bracelet. H.”

December 22 - 3 days left.

A silver ‘Y’ charm, for the next letter of his name, handed to him by Take but Ryu had known it was from Hayato. The note said so, after all. “For the bracelet. H.”

December 23rd - 2 days left.

It was there when he woke up, laying on the table next to his bed, folded inside of the note: a silver ‘U’. Now he had his whole name spelled out. “For the bracelet. H.”

December 24th - 1 day left.

Ryu decided he’d better think of something to get Hayato in return, for getting him all these little presents and everything. Contrary to some people’s beliefs, Ryu was a nice guy. And since Hayato was his best friend, it was only right.

Ryu also wondered where the hell Hayato had been the past few days. Hayato never missed this much school since Yankumi had become their teacher.

He looked down at his bracelet, now adorned with all the charms Hayato had given him, and allowed himself to smile just a little. He wondered where he would find the next charm for it.

When lunchtime came and still no charm had turned up, he felt almost a little disappointed. It had gotten to the point where the entire class of 3-D started a hunt for it (codenamed ‘Operation: Find Ryu’s Missing Christmas Present’ by Tsucchi and Hyuga). They eventually found it stuck on the underside of Hyuga’s desk (Ryu vaguely wondered how much of an idiot Hayato could be; did he really expect him to find it there first thing out of the gate?).

It was a silver and blue heart, with a little ‘H’ carved into it. By now, Hayato must have figured that Ryu knew it was he who was leaving the presents; there was no note (though the ‘H’ on the heart almost gave it away anyway).

Take laughed at the fact that the charm was a heart and started teasing. “Someone has a crush~” he said. He never specified who he had been talking about.

Ryu slapped him on the back of the head anyway.

Hayato still didn’t show up for class that day.

December 25th - Christmas.

Christmas Day, and Ryu hadn’t seen Hayato for a week. He almost missed him. Almost.

There was no school that day, so if he wanted to see Hayato, he was probably going to have to go to his apartment, seeing as the bastard might be too lazy to go to his house.

Ryu set off down the street on the way to Hayato’s place, looking around in case he happened to see the other walking around instead. When he got to the front door, he knocked and waited to see if anyone was home.

He heard Hayato’s voice answer “Hold on!” and then a minute later, the door was opened. Hayato stood there, looking as if he’d been in a hurry for something, and his eyes brightened up as he realized who was at his front door.

“Ryu!” he announced. “Come in.” He held open the door wide for Ryu to walk through. Ryu took off his shoes and headed towards Hayato’s bedroom.

Hayato sprinted past him and blocked the way with his body.

“Nuh uh, you’re not allowed in there. Not yet.”

Ryu raised an eyebrow. “Why not?”

“Because it’s a surprise. Just wait out here for a couple minutes and I’ll come get you when it’s done ok?”

Ryu shrugged and sat down on the floor in the hallway, asking Hayato if he could borrow a magazine or something for the time being so he would have something to do while Hayato finished his ‘surprise.’ Hayato threw a random issue of Shounen Jump at him, and hurriedly closed his bedroom door.

Ryu sighed and flipped through the magazine, bored (he’d read this one already), and waited for Hayato. Finally after about five minutes, Hayato opened the door and peeked his head out.

“You have to close your eyes first,” he said, and Ryu stood, sighed, and closed his eyes. Hayato led him through the door and to a spot in the middle of the room, and Ryu heard him close the door.

“Merry Christmas! Open your eyes!” Hayato’s voice was heard, and Ryu opened his eyes.

It was Hayato’s room, just the way it had always been.

“I don’t…see anything that’s been changed…” Ryu started. “Unless you’ve done something really small that I can’t notice.”

Hayato snorted. “Look up,” he replied, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.

Ryu did, and noticed the little green plant hanging from Hayato’s ceiling, directly over the two of them.

“Hayato?” he muttered in an almost-growl, looking at the other boy, who cringed a bit.

“You’re not mad at me, are you? Please don’t be mad, I just…”

Ryu kissed him.
