Lana sat out on her small porch with a pitcher of iced tea and Neffie sleeping on her lap. The cat hadn't wanted to be more than a few feet away from her since her return ( Read more... )

Piper wandered over sometime in the evening. "Hey Lana. I brought brownies."

She held a box out toward her.

Lana smiled at her. "Thanks. They're even soft enough that I can eat them. Hard foods and I are not on good terms as yet."

Piper nodded. "Yeah, didn't think so. Other than that, are you feeling any better?"

"Yeah," Lana said quietly. "It doesn't hurt nearly as much anymore."

"At least not physically, right?" Piper replied. She knew Lana had to be mentally hurting.

"Yeah," Lana said quietly. "At least physically. Emotionally... I'm not doing nearly as well."

Piper took a seat and gently asked, "What happened, Lana?"

"When the kids were here," Lana said quietly. "Lara, another me's daughter with Lex, showed up. Cutest little thing and utterly terrified. She and her mother were on the run, sounds like Lex killed Jim... It broke my heart."

"And then Saturday I found a note. From Lex. With a picture." She handed them to Piper. "So I went after him. To kill him. So he could never hurt them or anyone else again."

Piper looked at the picture and the note and shook her head in disgust. "I can see how that would shake you up enough to want to take action. Did you...?"

She trailed off, waiting for Lana to continue.

Lana swallowed hard and shook her head. "I tried, but I couldn't do it. I couldn't pull the trigger. And he laughed at me and told me I was too soft and that I'd never get away from him again. That's where the bruises on my arm come from."

Piper frowned at that, clearly getting angry at the thought of someone hurting her friend. "How did you get away?"

"Jim and Dean found out I'd gone. I didn't mean for them to. I thought by the time Jim realized I wasn't in town it would be over and I could call and tell him I was okay."

She closed her eyes against the pain. "But they found out and came after me. Just in time to see me fail. Lex slammed me in the face with my gun when I tried to get away and... he's dead."

"There's nothing wrong with being unable to kill someone," Piper said quietly. "I wouldn't have been able to."

"I'm just glad they got there in time," she continued, very much relieved.

"Yeah, me too. They were both pretty furious with me," Lana said. "And I can't blame them. But Piper, I couldn't let anything happen to them."

"I know," Piper said sympathetically. "You know there are a lot of people here who would have helped, right?"

"I do," Lana said seriously. "But Piper, I didn't want to put anyone here within Lex's reach. Especially not anyone with special abilities. He has this hidden research facility and anyone like that... he experiments on them."

"I figured if it was just me..."
