Luthor Mansion: Tuesday evening [8-19-08]

Aug 19, 2008 15:36

She'd left the rental car well back on the road and tucked off to the side where it wouldn't be too easy to run across - unless someone was looking for it specifically - and walked the rest of the way to the mansion. There was a place on the grounds that she knew very well: not covered by the ubiquitous cameras - at least not after a little ( Read more... )

"I'm impressed," Lex drawled, not looking at all bothered by the weapon. "I wouldn't have thought you'd have it in you to hold out this long. What was it? The picture of the man your lover pretended to be? I made sure he suffered, but it's nowhere near what I'd have done to Dean Winchester and Jim Ellison if you hadn't come back. And two men at once? If I'd known you were into that I'd have been glad to oblige you."

"I did learn from the master," Lana replied, the gun barely wavering despite everything. Tell me, Lex. How did you plan to get the three of us out of Milieux without being caught? I have a lot of friends there."

"Lana... I never would have hurt you. You know that."

He smirked at her. "And as long as you were willing to come with me, I wouldn't have touched a hair on the heads of your lovers."

"With a gun pointed at your head, you'll say anything, won't you?"

"The things I did to you were beyond inexcusable," he said, ignoring her comment. "I don't blame you for wanting to ruin my life. I probably would have done the same thing... only not as elegantly. I always knew you were smart, Lana. I didn't know you were brilliant... using my own science against me."

"It wasn't science, Lex. It was your own psychosis. You cloned me."

She remembered all too clearly stealing the clone of herself from the laboratory and strapping it into her car to be destroyed in the explosion. And she remembered equally well the horror she'd felt when she'd first learned of the existence of that clone.

He smirked at her again. "Not exactly. Model 503 was never alive. That's why you were able to wheel it out of my lab and place it in your driver's seat. By the time the car exploded, you were safe and sound while model 503, with your DNA, was being blown to bits. It was perfect. As far as the world's concerned, Lana Luthor is dead and buried."

"Which means now that you've come back where you belong... I can do anything I want unless you agree to my terms. All of them. No one will ever even know you're alive except me."

"But a dead woman can't be convicted of murder. You'll never hurt another person again, Lex." She steeled herself, knowing what she needed to do to make sure of that, even while something inside her feared she wouldn't be able to pull the trigger.

He laughed and stepped in quickly until the muzzle of the gun was almost touching his chest.

"Don't come any closer," she warned, feeling her voice rise with panic and her hand begin to shake. "I swear I'll do it."

"But I want to give you a better target," he said mockingly. "After all the pain I've put you through, I deserve to die. Please, Lana. Pull the trigger. I promise you the world will be a better place. Do it. Kill me."

She tried, tightening her finger on the trigger, staring into his face, so close to hers...

Tried and failed.

Just as he'd always known she would.

Lex took the gun away from her gently. "You're too soft, Lana, and I know you too well. You should have shot me the second you saw me. You could have done that."

His arm gripped her upper arm bruisingly. "But too much time with me let you remember the man you thought I was, the man I pretended to be for you and I knew if you gave me that time... you'd be too weak to do it."

She stared up at him. "Why? You can't stand me. You don't love me, you've never loved anyone. Why couldn't you just leave me alone?"

"That's where you're wrong," he said grimly, digging his fingers even harder into her arm. "You're the only person I've ever truly loved and you loved me too, once. And one way or another you will again. No matter what I have to do to make that happen. You betrayed me and you and the men who helped you will pay for that betrayal."

"But once they're gone... You'll be mine forever."

"Don't count on that." It had taken them a bit to find Lana and Lex, and Dean had been tempted to keep back and see if Lana would be able to handle it.

But when he heard Lex start throwing threats around, he knew it was time to act. He came out from between the trees, leading with his gun.
