Back to School

Had a couple of days off due to a pretty bad cold, but I didn't want to fall too far behind so I went back today.

Day started out badly. Mr. Davies trying to be inspirational in assembly again, he told us about a friend of his from a comprehensive school like ours who'd worked really hard, gotten three A*'s, gone to Cambridge to study Law, moved to America, gone to Harvard to get a degree in American Law and is now head Lawyer at some important firm. I get what he was trying to do, but flaunting the success one individual managed to achieve due to intellect and motivation is not going to help a bunch of C grade or lower students with no particular ambition to achieve likewise.

Personally I think his determination to get us all off our asses and applying to university whether we want to or not stems from his own dissapointment that he hasn't achieved anything either great or that well paid. Stop projecting douchebag, some of us would rather die than endure more education in our lives right now!

Things picked up during lessons though. Had English Lit first with Ms. Williams. We're reading extracts from Oliver Twist, focusing on the presentation of Fagin in order to prove Charles Dickens was an Anti-Semitic bastard.

Had a free second so I read more of Lolita. Got noisy at break in the common room so I headed up to the library to read some more. Ms. O'Kelly hasn't had a chance to read my story for the competition yet, but I can wait.

English with Ms. Glover third. We're reading 'The Time-Torn Man', a biography of Thomas Hardy by Claire Tomalin. We were split into groups to focus upon the influence of our four key contextual themes in Hardy's life. I got "Science and Religion" so I spent the lesson reading about his religious upbringing. I have til next Wednesday to read the rest of the book and gather some notes; then I'll exchange with everyone else so we all have notes on all four areas.

Had Biology with Dr. Bonsi fourth. Pretty boring lesson with him outlining our upcoming practical exam and reminding us to revise photosynthesis and statistics in preparation for it.

Went to Tesco and bought a BLT for lunch, then went and chatted with Matt and Ashley in the common room til it was time for form. Signed in at form and then went home.

book: lolita, sixth form: biology, sixth form: english literature, friend: ashley
