Communism is awesome, in THEORY

This past weekend, I went out camping for the first time in a long time, which was pretty sweet. Unfortunately, I apparently was unaware of the disposition of the people I was camping with. Specifically, we got into a discussion over teaching creationism in schools and I mentioned FSM. One of the girls there had never heard of it and so I explained it a bit, how followers are called "Pastafarians", etc. Anyway, I was talking about how the rise of Intelligent Design in schools was thwarted, in large part, by FSM. At this point, the same girl proceeded to say, "I don't see what's wrong with teaching Intelligent Design in schools, I mean, Evolution is just a theory..."

At which point I nearly exploded.

See, I have this thing with when people use this particular straw man tactic because it is so baseless and misleading. I proceeded to explain to her that gravity is also a theory, was she going to say they shouldn't necessarily teach that in schools either? At which point Jason, my one friend who I generally respect and feel is educated says, "Chris, c'mon, there's theories and then there's theories."

I nearly punched him in the face.

At which point I realized that I was sitting with a group entirely (except myself) composed of people who all attend the same evangelical church. I let the matter drop and I think the expression on my face told everyone else to do the same. Like I needed more reasons to hate organized religion and Christianity with more firey passion...

rant, camping, religion
