My reading, another reading...what happened to films?

Tomorrow (Tuesday) night, 1718 is hosting another reading in the Columns Hotel starting at 6:30 PM. This time the featured writer will be Poppy Z. Brite, who apparently is retiring from writing after this reading (so I've heard from Professor Martin). It will be followed up by students readers much like last time (though I'm not one of them this time of course).

I guess to update from the last post, the reading went well. The turnout was ridiculously good because they expected 50 people, only had seats for 35, and estimated that at least 100 showed up. That was for the main reader, after which they actually counted how many stayed for the student readers, which was 70 people. I went second. I was going to recount the experience as a story here, but you know how I've been about that...anyway, I only had two big glasses of Abita Amber within the hour and twenty minutes before I read because the bartendress was not serving people according to waiting place, but by position at the bar (favored the right side). Very irritating, especially since it was before the event started and then in the short intermission. I got up, introduced and read my pieces pretty much in the tone and pace I planned, and was nervous as hell because I got no audible response from the listeners. I did realize that I wasn't allowing the time between pieces for people to clap or whatnot, but I've never been one to ham it up for an audience pop. Afterwards, Kaitlin (ReVisions editor and “1718” co-coordinator) thanked me and looked pretty thrilled (she was greatly nervous but shrugged it off well through the night). I got adulations from different people, so then I knew I did alright. I wasn't too sure due to the silence, though I made a lot of eye contact during the reading and saw that most seemed into it. My classmate, Ashley, read really well too and came off with charm. Between the turnout and no real flubs, the reading series got a great start. Tomorrow, I'll remember to get there early and take full advantage of Happy Hour drink prices and small crowd. It'll be nice to view this time rather than be a part.

I've slowly been revising my production script for the umpteenth time, though this follows an actual in-class critique as opposed to scattered feedback. Had to format the script properly too. I'm getting listless with revising, but it'll be go time soon. Shit, still need to fill some roles (mainly small parts/extras), but I kept getting sucked back into the writing. Luckily, Kari's been on top of getting main roles filled. I just need to meet with and coach those people, preferably before Mardi Gras break so shooting can start soon after we get back. We'll get there...

The weekdays are getting listless as well. Lots of class reading and such. I have a project for Arthurian Legend in which I (don't know yet if alone or as a group) will have to make a study guide for high school or middle school kids about a tenant/theme of medieval tales/history which can be turned into a lesson plan. Loyola's drama dept is doing Excalibur!, a play based off of Le Morte Darthur written for a younger audience. So yeah, the study guides we make will be used to supplement. Prof. Sebastian has been haggling with the drama dept., since they wanted the things before Mardi Gras break (which they just told him this past weekend). Instead, it will be due shortly afterward, so hopefully that'll be enough time for whatever they (and he) expect out of this. It takes the place of the course's research paper, so it won't just be screwing around. I have to go to the play and give a review on it, though Sebastian says they're having a run-through this Thursday that would fulfill the viewing requirement (then I'd have to write the review soon after). May just go to that.

Life's getting better in this new year. ;) I never expected to put a smiley in this thing.
