Lilo had taken a swim, had a chocolate pudding for lunch, and read a book. But she was still bored. She went back to her room to paint and listen to music. Nothing. Still bored. She looked around for something to do, then grinned when she saw her camera. She wound it, feeling something inside catch. It felt like there might be film in side ( Read more... )

Ellie wasn't an adult, despite how she may have been treated in the past year or so and she rather enjoyed being around adults...having a chance to try and be a teenager again.

She was sitting in the lobby; back to the wall, pen in one hand and a few sheets of paper resting on a book in her lap. She was furiously writing, getting her story up to date, not just because she'd promised the Doctor that he could have a read when it was done, but because as much as it hurt, she didn't want to forget.

She was engrossed in her recounting, she was up to the fight on the train...nearly to where she'd decapitated that soldier in glasses. She shut her eyes, seeing the scene vividly in her imagination.

She hadn't even seen the young girl.

Lilo smiled and went over to the girl. She was barefoot, so she was mostly quiet. As quiet as any six-year-old could be.

"You're pretty. Can I take your picture?" She gave the older girl her best smile, the one that got candy from strangers.

Ellie jumped when the girl approached, paper going everywhere as she looked around like a trapped animal trying to find a way out. She calmed again when she realised it was only a child. About as old as Casey was when they first saved the Stratton Ferals.

"I...sure, if you'd like." Ellie attempted a smile back at the younger girl and patted the floor beside her. "Sorry, I wasn't expecting anyone." It was amazing how quickly she'd deemed this place 'safe.'

Lilo stood back a little, biting her lip and looking nervous until she calmed down. She went over and sat next to her.

"You're as jumpy as a stray kitten. Are you lost?" Maybe she'd just arrived.

Ellie put her paper on the pile situated on the otherside of her, resting the pen carefully on top of it all. "Being 'jumpy' has kept me alive...I'm not used to the fact that I don't have to watch my back all the time here. It's...nice..."

"Then don't lose it totally. If we end up randomly going home, I don't want you to be in danger." Lilo looked at the other girl's hair. "My mother used to braid my hair like that. I can't get it because it's too long. I'm glad you like it here."

"I...I'm hoping the War will be over when I go home, I've had enough of fighting. I've lost almost everything important to me." A small shrug, "I just want to see my parents again...see if they're alright."

Ellie paused for a moment and looked at Lilo's hair, "I..." another pause as she thought through the offer, "I could perhaps braid it for you? I used to braid Casey's before we managed to get her and the Ferals a lift to New Zealand."

Lilo had heard of wars, but for her, they were more of a thing in books. They weren't something that pretty people sort of close to her age were in. They certainly weren't something they fought in.

"I hope your parents are alright too. And if they're not, I hope someone good takes care of you." She gave the girl a cautious hug, making sure not to take too long.

"If you want to braid it, that'd make me really happy. My hair keeps getting into my mouth." She gestured at how long it was.

It felt like one of Casey's little hugs even, and Ellie cautiously put an arm around her. "Thank you. I'm Ellie, Ellie Linton by the way, enemy number one in the Wirrawee-Stratton district." A small smile on her face as she motioned for Lilo to sit in front of her, "of course I'll braid your hair for you."

Lilo plopped down in front of her. "I'm Lilo Pelekai, and um. I don't know where that is. I'm from Hawaii. Do you know where that is, or are you from the future too?"

"It's a small town in Australia. Though, it very quickly became a main enemy stronghold. My friends and I were the only ones not caught in our area." Ellie took strands of Lilo's hair in her hands and began to braid. "Hawaii? Corrie and I were planning on going there one day."

"You should! You can stay with me and Nani and Stitch. Our island's great - there's no big cities, so there's not as many tourists." She wrinkled her nose. She hated it when tourists didn't think she spoke English, or thought she was stupid.

"David wants to go Australia someday. He's a surfer."

"Perhaps I might go one day, but it won't be the same without Corrie. We grew up together, almost like sisters we were." Ellie sighed a little, "I miss her."

"Is he a good surfer? Or does he just do it for the fun of it?" Ellie hadn't had much of a chance to do anything 'just for fun' lately, not since their first camping trip into Hell, days before the War.

"Family's important." Lilo smiled. "I could be your little sister. If you wanted. I'm River's little sister now, too." Lilo knew family was a flexible word, and she was willing to help other people understand that fact as well.

"David's pretty good, but he does it for fun, too. He takes me and Nani and Stitch out sometimes."

"It is, I've done so much just to try and save my parents, and my friend's parents." It was selfish she knew, but then she was still a child despite everything that has happened. "That...that would be nice. Thank you."

"I don't go to the beach often," the last time had been when her and Homer blew up Cobbler's Bay, "I lived on a farm, it was a rare occasion that we went to the city...or the beach."

"You're welcome. Everyone needs family, even the people who are far away from their families." She patted Ellie's leg.

"We live right on the beach. When you visit, you'll be able to hear the waves from my bedroom. You'll smell like it for as long as you visit." She smiled a little, thinking of how much Ellie would like surfing with David and Stitch and Nani.
