Not much happening right now, but the week did show some high points. Let’s start off with Monday. Went to school and everything. Nothing important happened. After school, I chilled for a little bit, talked to colleen on the phone for a bit. Then around 5 I went over Jenks’ house to wait for Amanda to pick us up. We were going to the Slayer concert that evening in Providence at Lupo’s, or as the building says now, Diesel. We drove down to providence, taking the highway. We took the correct exit, but got a little lost getting into the city. We had to pull over anyway seeing as her car overheated. While Amanda attended the problem, jenks and I went into a gas station to ask for directions to get onto Washington Street. We weren’t that far away. We had to take a right, then a left and then another right and we would be right at Lupo’s. On that short drive over, some lady bumped the side of Amanda’s car. The lady got out and then, after realizing it was her fault, waved ‘its ok’ and drove off. We paid $10 for parking Jenks thought was free, and then got in line. We only had to stand in line for like 10 minutes, and we weren’t that far back in the line. We got in and I went right to my favorite spot, and waited for the opening bands to come on.
Jenks went down in the pit to get closer, but ever since I went to the dark lotus concert, I hate being in that front area, because you cant enjoy the music because you have to deal with dickheads crowd surfing and getting kicked in the head. That sucks. So Amanda and I chilled in the best spot. Its eye level with the band, and roughly 15 feet away from them. The host for this night was a man who went by the name “the lizardman.” He was fucking insane, literally. He, over the course of the night, drank an entire bottle of jagermeister whiskey. Had darts thrown at his chest, swallow a condom and then regurgitate it out of his nose, and vice versa, and he stuck meat hooks in his lower eyelids, and picked up a box of 3 full bottles of jager in it, and swung them back and forth. It was pretty sick looking.
The first band then came on, which I thought was supposed to be Q. It ended up being Brand New Sin, who I have heard of. They sucked. Its generic metal with the same chord progressions and same type singing and generic solos that weren’t well executed. They didn’t get booed off the stage, but people were happy when they left. Lizardman came on again to introduce the next band, Mastodon. Man they kicked a lot of ass. I was expecting a half decent showing by them, but they were really, really good. They started off with ‘iron tusk’, and then without missing a beat, went right into ‘march of the fire ants.’ It was so nasty. They did Megalodon, which has this awesome part where there is like a “hick laced” guitar solo, then a pause, then an amazing breakdown. They ended with Blood and Thunder after about a 25-30 minute set.
Killswitch Engage came on next and to me, they stole the show. They are from Boston, so they sort of had that going for them, seeing as we weren’t too far away in providence. Howard, the lead singer, is this humongous black guy who is jacked more than Glenn Danzig. Adam, the guitar player is just plain goofy. They opened with ‘a bid farewell’ which, in my opinion, is the best song of the year so far. Then they played the first song off their second album, and then they played ‘take this oath.’ There was something really awesome about that song. But to know that, you need to know this. Their original singer, Jesse, left the band before they really made it big with their stint on ozzfest 2003 and their new album due to personal reasons. He came on and sang ‘take this oath’ which is a new KsE song, with Howard. It was just pretty awesome to see something like that. They played for another 30 minutes and ended the set with ‘my last serenade.’ The people who were in front of us left because I guess they didn’t like slayer, so we were perfectly front center then.
Slayer came on after about 20 minutes of the smoke machine going off. Everyone was really getting into it. Ill be honest, I don’t know a lot by slayer. I own Reign in Blood and that is one of my favorite albums, and I have hell awaits and have heard South of Heaven. But other than reign in blood, all of their stuff is kind of the same, insanely fast with ridiculous solos and blasting double bass drumming. The first 40 minutes of their set were just songs I wasn’t familiar with. They played awesome, but I didn’t know what they were playing, so it was kind of hard to get into. Then they played ‘Hell Awaits’ and cradle covered it and it’s just an awesome song. Then they started playing stuff from reign in blood. They played ‘Angel of Death’ which they didn’t play at ozzfest. Then they played ‘Postmortem’ and ended it with ‘Raining blood.’ I got some pretty sweet pictures, so when I get them developed and upload them onto photobucket.com, I will put them on here. We found our way home generally painlessly, and I got some dunkin donuts and went to bed. SCHOOL WAS IN THE MORNING! Ill update more when something else worth writing about happens. Until then, goodnight.
