Because all the cool kids are doing it.
Also because I came out of the finale with massive Lieutenant feels, so this meme is going to be about him.
Don't think I can't see those surprised faces.
So! Give me a prompt about the Lieutenant, AU or otherwise. The only prompts I will ignore are repeated ones, and anything about him being an ex-bender

Shiro's a huge nerd; he knows all sorts of history and trivia from his years as a reporter and he references it a lot in his pro-bending announcing. His family's been in the Republic City area since it was part of the Earth Kingdom, and he's got FN and EK ancestry. He was an intrepid reporter who got into a ridiculous amount of trouble, solved a couple mysteries, and eventually got so cynical about the ability of the city to deal with the triads that he quit reporting (which part of him still regrets to this day). He married an Earthbender, Kyoko, who recently immigrated from Kyoshi Island, and they have one nonbender kid, Nami, who is as much of a fangirl of pro-bending as her dad.
Shiro's in the wonderful position of having to choose between the Equalists and the government; the Equalists don't like him because he promotes pro-bending, as a non-bender he's targeted under Tarrlok's laws and does have a lot of disadvantages, so no matter what side he picks, he's in trouble. The question is, what does he pick that causes the least amount of collateral damage to his family?
(Yes! And Bumi can be Coulson.)

Shiro got hurt during one of his last reporter jobs - collateral damage from two waterbender gangs flinging ice around - and so he needs a cane to get around. He's amazed that he didn't get injured earlier since he's got an amazing skill for picking fights with cranky benders, and he's glad that it was an injury he actually survived.
Kyoko takes after her great to the something ancestor, Kyoshi, in temperament, but she's not a very strong bender. She makes up for it in her specialization: making holes in the ground. Which doesn't sound so great until she sinks you up to your ankles in concrete or makes a miniature. It's also helpful for her as a gardener. At one point, she ran around as the Superman to Shiro's Lois Lane.
Nami wanted to go to the pro-bending finals dressed up as Pabu. Shiro was totally narrating the episode previously ons to her at breakfast. He spoils the crap out of her; Kyoko's the disciplinarian.
When they were discussing what to do if they had to pick sides, the family ended up reluctantly choosing the Equalists. Kyoko would rather lose her bending than put her family in danger from the curfew laws. This did not stop them from running around and trying to do reporter shenanigans at everyone during the last four episodes.
(I suspect under that suit and tie is a Bumi just waiting for a chance to get out...)
