My friend Austin Grossman had his first novel published earlier this month. It's called
Soon I Will Be Invincible, and it's about superheros and supervillains. It's a really fun read, and I highly recommend it. (
mikecap, you in particular should read this one.)
The novel swaps narrators between chapters. Half the book is narrated by Fatale, a female cyborg who is new to the whole hero thing. The other half is narrated by Doctor Impossible, a mad scientist (or rather, a sufferer of "malign hypercognitive disorder"). The book, while not a Watchmen sort of very serious take on the superhero genre, definitely has a cerebral tone and is not really focused on battles between powers. Rather, it explores the personal and interpersonal histories of various heroes and villains.
I mean, just check out this one line, where Doctor Impossible is discussing a setback:
"When life gives you lemons, make invisible ink. Make an acid poison. You throw it in their eyes."
Holy. Shit.
Austin is doing a reading at the Harvard Co-op on Tuesday, June 26, at 7pm. I'll be there. You should be, too.
As a brief aside, I know Austin through game development stuff: he was a designer at Looking Glass Studios and has worked on
a lot of great games.
