Prop 8 essay

Jan 08, 2009 20:51

My supervisor is a lesbian woman who has married her partner of 15 years on November 1st, 2008. Their marriage license looks just like ours! Well, her marriage is currently in limbo, along with thousands of other marriages registered between the Supreme court's decision and this election.

As she describes, "My dad was never particularly inclined to see my partnership with [her partner]  in political terms or as connected to civil rights issues, until our wedding.  Something about the wedding followed by the passage of Prop 8 has galvanized him like I’ve never seen before.  He isn’t one to march in protests, but write he can and does.  I encouraged him to submit one of his blog postings on this topic to newspapers and the Sacramento News and Review accepted this one for its Jan 1st edition.  It's his ideas for a strategy going forward.  He had to cut it down to 500 words, but his ideas are still there."
