Adventures in Gardening 2008

It's that time again...

Last weekend, we finally used a real shovel to get most of those damn day lilies out of our box so they don't get all overgrown like they did last year. I wish I had taken a picture of just how much we dug out on Saturday; their root structure is just crazy! I think I was able to recognize the two, count 'em, TWO places where the original owner had put a couple sets of day lilies.
We still have to get some mulch, and there's a tiny patch on the other side of our steps that we have to dig up and plant something in, but even without that stuff done, I love walking up to my house now. I know it's not the most beautiful landscaping or anything, but I'm really rather proud of what we've done (and I did most of it because T had class on Saturday--not complaining, just saying why I am that proud of our little garden box).

I HATE those whatever-they-are plants that bordered the front of the box, so they were the first thing I dug up, and I was so happy to do it! We also ended up getting rid of the half dead/half alive bush on the far right, in the front. We weren't able to get rid of the entire root structure before T managed to break the shovel, so we're going to finish that later and replace with another kind of bush (I don't remember the name, but the leaves are a neat texture and tint toward yellow on the ends).

I'm such a horrible gardener... I don't remember the name of some of the plants I got! I got three (varying shades of white through pink) Japanese something or other bushes (they're small now, but they should get bigger, provided I don't accidentally kill them) and two little Rhododendron bushes (only planted one; the other will go on the left side of the steps). Then to take up the space in front, I got some pansies and alyssum for color.
We still need to trim the existing bushes, which are a few box(?) bushes, azaleas, and holly. And as stated, we definitely need some mulch, but I'm still really happy about how it turned out.
