I wrote a sweet arpeggio today... my first one ever. I know almost nothing about their construction, but only what notes go together and I think these ones do. It fits well with a new song I'm working on... I really want to be able to sweep :(
working on it.
I rearranged the tracks on Lateralus today thanks to a conversation I had with Ivan at work and of this website: http://www.peteofthestreet.net/sayz/C1151806467/E1494764863/
I used one of the ones in the "comments" section and not the actualy "Holy Gift" one proposed by a fan. I knew all about the fibonacci sequence and phi and the golden ratio and spirals before now (it's quite obvious in the song Lateralis - no, that's not a spelling mistake... the album and song name are spelt different) but this idea of an alternate track listing was intriguing so I tried it out. Sometimes I think people take Tool too seriously but I think they should look beyond the mysticism and the stage persona and see them as human too. Still though, it's a cool idea.

I think it would be more intriguing to do this track listing though (and I'm surprised no one has mentioned it because it seems so intuitive). It's obvious that 6 and 7 need to go together because they flow seemlessly into each other so we'll keep them. 10, 11, 12, although originally conceived as one giant song need to be split up for practical purposes. But what would happen if we create a "spiral" like this, with 6 and 7 as the centre (of consciousness):

5,3,1,12,10,8,6,7,9,11,13,2,4

If you were to draw a parabola connecting 6 and 7 (like an upside-down "U") and proceed down and up towards 8 and then up and over to 9, etc, you'd draw a spiral. the fact that 6 and 7 are called "parabol" and "parabola" respectively is significant in this regard. ALSO, you end up with an album that places all of their full songs in the first portion of the album and all the "interlude" songs last, as a kind of mental decresendo - "Faaip De Oaid" being the culmination and the descrease beginning with "Eon Blue Apocalypse" and then finally, "Mantra." Also, considering "Schism" was their first single, it also makes sense that it is the first song on the album. As far as this connection extends lyrically, your guess is as good as mine.

I wonder if the new Tool album will be about prime numbers. Though, they ALMOST went that route with "Aenima" - if only they didn't make #9 ("Hooker With A Penis") or #15 ("third Eye") songs, the track listing of actual songs would have went: 1,2,3,5,7,11,13...
Shit, I'm turning into a crazy Tool fan. Anyway, maybe one day I'll rip that track listing of Lateralus and remove the silences between and hear what it sounds like.

I have about half a page written of my paper. I don't know what's happening to me.
