Sebastian couldn’t help the small thrill of excitement that momentarily bounced in his stomach when he walked into the Lima Bean that morning and recognized the back of one Kurt Hummel. He was dressed to the nines, as per usual, and sitting at a round table across the room. Though he didn’t want to admit just how much he had come to enjoy their back and forth, there was no denying that his chats with Kurt brightened his day. And after his chat with Blaine just the day before, Sebastian was curious to get Kurt’s side of the story. It was still a little surreal, the thought of Kurt and Blaine breaking up.
Kurt was sitting alone just like Blaine had been the day before, but Kurt was sitting ramrod straight whereas Blaine had been slumped dejectedly in his chair. Kurt’s back was to him as he stood in the long line for coffee. Sebastian cursed under his breath when he noticed the girl at the till was ‘the slow one’ after wondering why it was taking so long for the line to move. She was the girl who always wore a confused expression on her face and did everything at a painfully slow pace. He glanced back over to Kurt hoping that the boy wouldn’t finish his coffee and leave before Sebastian even had the chance to corner him. From his new angle when the line had finally moved forward, Sebastian could see that Kurt was flipping idly through a magazine only taking small sips from his coffee cup ever so often. It made him hopeful that Kurt would be around for a while.
Finally, he reached the till and placed his order. Knowing the final cost from repetitive purchases, he pulled out the exact change from his wallet before the girl had rung it through the till. He dropped it down on the counter and stepped to the side to wait for his coffee. Fortunately, the guy who was filling the coffee orders was much quicker than the girl at the till and Sebastian had a warm cup of Espresso Macchiato in his hand not long after.
Sebastian had managed to come up with what was probably his best opening line yet in regards to greeting Kurt while he had been waiting in line. So, as he walked over to seat himself across the table from Kurt, he found himself already grinning in anticipation of Kurt’s response.
“Blaine’s not here,” spat out Kurt before Sebastian could even open his mouth.
“Okay,” replied Sebastian slowly, enunciating both syllables and feeling vexed that Kurt stole his chance to use his line.
“So, you there’s no need for your smirky...”
“Meerkat face, yeah,” cut in Sebastian with a long-suffering frown.
Sebastian pulled the metal chair out from the table. Kurt glanced up from his magazine just long enough to shoot Sebastian an angry glare before looking back down and flipping a page.
“You’re flipping through those pages rather fast,” said Sebastian as he sat down in the chair opposite of Kurt. “For someone who claims to be able to read, I mean.”
Kurt shrugged and took another sip of his coffee.
“Tell me that isn’t Vogue,” laughed Sebastian a moment later, wishing Kurt would snap back at him like he usually did. “You are so gay.”
“You make a lot of gay jokes,” replied Kurt, indifferently. “For someone who claims to be gay, I mean.”
Sebastian smirked... no, grinned, he didn’t smirk, he grinned... Kurt was such an ass for ruining his grin. Sebastian grinned at Kurt and leaned back in his chair before taking a long drink of his own coffee. Kurt stared resolutely down at his magazine, his face drawn.
“So, I hear you dumped Blaine,” said Sebastian conversationally.
“Yes,” replied Kurt, not looking up. “He’s free to pursue, not that his relationship status stopped you before.”
Sebastian hummed in acknowledgment before taking another drink of his coffee, eyeing Kurt appraisingly.
“I’m surprised,” commented Sebastian. “There aren’t a lot of people in the world who can look down during sex see such a ‘gayface’ staring back at them and still be able to climax. I would have held onto whatever I could get were I you.”
Kurt bit his lip and blinked a few times in quick succession. He didn’t reply. Sebastian’s smirk... GAH, no, his grin, his grin, daaammnit... his grin disappeared into a thin-lipped grimace. He was just looking to get a rise from Kurt, but perhaps he had gone too far with that comment.
“Um,” stammered Sebastian, coughing lightly and clearing his throat. “So, what did he do?”
“What?” asked Kurt looking up at Sebastian for the first time since he had sat down.
Sebastian winced internally when he finally noticed how red-rimmed Kurt’s eyes were.
“What did he do to make you dump his ass?” asked Sebastian, clarifying his question.
“Maybe I just wanted a change,” replied Kurt with a shrug before he looked back down at his magazine to try to hide his weepy expression.
“Right,” scoffed Sebastian half-heartedly. “Kurt the Romantic broke up with his sickeningly sweet boyfriend because he wanted to play the field... What did he do?”
Kurt let out an exasperated sigh.
“He wanted to go on a break,” he said, barely above a whisper.
“Why?” asked Sebastian, though he knew Blaine’s reasons from having a similar conversation with him just the day before.
“That’s what I want to know,” muttered Kurt barely audibly, before clearing his throat and saying, “He wanted us to go on a break for the next year while I’m in New York and he’s stuck back here. He said it would be easier to cope.”
“So, instead, you broke up with him,” mused Sebastian, playing with the lid of his coffee cup idly.
“I know,” sighed Kurt, closing his magazine and finally looking across the table at Sebastian like he was actually partaking in the conversation. “It sounds silly...”
“No,” cut in Sebastian.
“What?” stammered Kurt.
“It’s not silly,” said Sebastian.
Kurt raised his eyebrow.
“He practically told you that he’s not ready to work at the relationship as hard as you,” explained Sebastian with a shrug. “So, breaking up with him seems like the smart thing to do. Self preservation and all that; I would have done the same thing.”
“Surprisingly, you telling me that you would have done the same thing doesn’t make me feel any better,” muttered Kurt.
Sebastian smirked... wait, no... DAMNIT! He sure grinned a lot. Funny how one doesn’t realize how often they do something until someone says something about it.
“You can’t just go on ‘a break’ every time it gets hard,” Sebastian parroted the words Blaine had told him Kurt had used when breaking up with him. “Committed relationships don’t work that way.”
Kurt’s breath caught in his throat for a moment. He looked across the table at Sebastian for a few moments, like, really looked. Sebastian leaned back in his chair again and let his eyes lock onto Kurt’s for a few seconds before smiling genuinely and shrugging.
“Yeah,” stuttered Kurt. “That’s... yeah.”
Sebastian watched as Kurt let out a shaky sigh and looked up at the ceiling for a few seconds as if willing tears not to flow from his eyes.
“I thought Blaine would have known that,” Kurt said in a shaky, hushed voice.
“He’s kind of oblivious,” replied Sebastian with another shrug, trying for nonchalance.
It surprised Sebastian how much Kurt’s emotions were affecting him. He had come to tease and instead here he was was using all his strength to hold himself back from stepping around the table to pull Kurt into his arms. He knew there was a reason he didn’t like Kurt; that stupid boy kept making him feel things.
“I’m sure you’ll find someone better,” said Sebastian, trying to sound casual about it. “Your face isn’t all that bad.”
Sebastian stood, then, and walked out of the Lima Bean on shaky legs, half-drank coffee in hand. He had to get out of there before he did something stupid.
