It started with a bang. I just saw the face of God, he tells you. You catch a glimpse of what has to be a devastatingly gorgeous man speeding away in a jeep, and your heart drops into the pit of your stomach. Suddenly, everything falls into place and it hurts more than you ever expected it to.

You could have told me, you hear yourself say, desperately hoping the hurt can’t be heard. Right away, you hate Brian Kinney for taking away everything you’ve never known. All the dreams and images you had, pale white skin tangled up with chocolate black, are gone before you can blink. He wants to talk about it, and you let him, ignoring all the pain you feel because this, the right here and now, is more important than any of the might have been’s.

Justin’s beautiful. You’ve always known that. When he was child, his mother brought him to a few photo shoots. Justin doesn’t remember them, but you do. Your parents had exchanged pictures, the same ones you stole from the photo box a year ago. They’re hidden carefully in a drawer next to your bed. The pictures always made you laugh, a little secret carefully hidden away just for you. Now, you look at him through the corner of you eye as he talks about sex in a way you never expected and he just shines. At this moment, he’s more beautiful than ever, and that’s when you know.
The next night, you play the sleepover game. Why didn’t you ever realize how odd it was for your parents to allow you to spend the night at a boy’s house, or, as it happened more often, Justin sleeping on the tiny air mattress on the floor in your room? Of course, neither one of you are sleeping over anybody’s house this night.
You’ve never been to Liberty Avenue at night, before. It’s a completely different place, bright lights and men hold hands on every corner. Justin seems to know it way around perfectly, and you let him lead. Justin’s always been the one to lead. You’ve never minded before, because you know that he wouldn’t ever let anything bad happen to you, but Liberty scares you just a bit. Suddenly you’re in a whole new world, one that you didn’t grow up in, grow up together in, and you feel blind. But Justin is there to lead you, like he has so many times and maybe; just maybe, Brian Kinney hasn’t destroyed everything.

Justin’s the strongest person you know. He was the one that carried you back to your house that time you fell off your bike in second grade; the one that punched Timmy Rogers in the face when he called you a nigger; never cared that he was the only boy taking art classes and not kickball during recess. When he came out at school you were so proud of him. No matter what Chris Hobbs did to him, Justin kept going. At first, you thought Brian was going to break him. Justin was trying so hard and you were there for every minute of it, and you liked Brian, you really did, but every time Justin was happy, every time you thought he finally had it together, Brian kicked him in stomach and you had to watch Justin struggle to stay above water.

And then there was prom. Prom changed everything. It wasn’t supposed to. You were going to go together, even though Justin wanted Brian there. You wanted Brian there. And then, without warning, he was. The moment you saw Brian walk into prom you knew Justin was right. He was someone worth fighting for. And they danced and you watched and it was the most amazing thing you had ever seen in your eighteen years of life.

It was prom that made you realize just how much Brian really loved Justin. You didn't make it outside until it was almost too late. You heard the sirens outside, and Justin wasn't back yet and then there was a sinking feeling in your gut. You were out of breath and scared shitless by the time you saw the EMT's and Brian, covered in blood that wasn't his. You took his cell phone away from him, moving him aside for the emergency workers to do their job. It was numbing, making the important calls that Brian couldn't make (Mrs. Taylor, your mother). After a moment, you called Debbie, one of the few names in Brian's cell phone that meant anything to you. Then your parents made you come home.

It was weeks before you saw Brian again. Those weeks you spent at Justin's bedside, quietly reassuring him that Brian loved him when he needed it, he reassuring you that it was worth it. You had to tell him everything, he didn't remember anything. That hurt you most of all. At first, the doctors kept saying it would come back to him, but as time went on, they stopped and you knew that Mrs. Taylor stopped believing it too. You didn't. Justin had to remember if he wanted to win Brian back.

And then Justin was home, begging you to drive him to Woody's. It didn't take much to convince you. You saw, with your own two eyes, just how much Brian cared. After Justin went inside, you sat in the car for a few minutes and waited. You waited until you saw Michael leave and you waited even longer until you saw Justin again, tucked carefully under Brian's arm.

It ended with a whimper. Brian leaned down to kiss the top of Justin's head, and you knew everything would be alright. You were always Brian's biggest champion, even when Justin had his doubts, you didn't. From your vantage point across the street you could see the look in Brian's eyes. It was love.
