Ford was being a bastard again. He'd dragged her out all day and made her 'practice' her 'skills' which most had him being a jerk and her being pissed. Either way, he'd gotten in the way of her chores all day and she was exhausted since she mostly worked at night. As retaliation, she forced him to stop at a convenient store so she could at least ( Read more... )

She should have known he was coming up behind her. And when she was suddenly pressed harshly against the man behind her, the cold of the metal gun against her skin, she couldn't scream. She wanted to. She should have, but she was frozen, terrified, her heart pounding and her mind was overwhelmed. Blocking emotions was out of the question. Between the man with the gun, the fright of the cashier and then black nothingness, she was sure that this was the end of it ( ... )

"Hurry up!" So far so good, but that didn't ease the mood of the man with the gun at all. His heart was beating wildly in his chest ( ... )

There was a short whimper from Darcy when the man yelled again. The cashier was finally getting something out of the drawer when the front door opened. The tall man looked strangely normal and even more strangely calm, even when the gun was pointed at him.

Darcy whimpered his name just before the gun was pressed to her throat again. She swallowed. She was shaking and crying and if it wasn't for the man holding her hostage, she'd be on the floor. She wanted to run to him, she wanted to do something other than stand there and cry, but she had nothing left to do but pray to God that she would live.

Ford tilted his head slightly to the side, silently looking at the robber. It was hard to get a reading of actual thoughts since the guy was shifting his eyes from him to the cashier repeatedly. What he did get was that the man didn't want to shoot anybody, but he also seemed twitchy enough that it could happen anyway.

It didn't take long for Ford's staring to unnerve the robber. "Stop looking at me like that!" He yelled and once again aimed the gun at Ford. That was all the tall man needed. With the gun away from Darcy, he trapped the man when their eyes met again. Unable to move, unable to speak, the robber could only stare as Ford started to slowly move towards him. "Let her go," Ford said, giving a mental order to accompany his words. The robber did so, letting Darcy fall to the floor.

Ford stopped when the muzzle of the gun was just touching his chest. Then he gave another mental order, silently this time. The robber, with a sense of complete and utter terror in his mind, raised the gun to his own head.

He was terrifying. She'd never seen him like that before. Darcy had seen for angry and she'd seen him annoyed and even furious enough to yell at her, but she'd never seen that look. The man let go of her and her knees buckled, crumbling to the ground. The cashier was frozen in place, holding a wad of money and staring as the man with the gun followed orders.

Darcy couldn't block anything and she felt the unbridled terror as the robber's gun moved effortlessly to his own head. Darcy looked up at Ford, frightened and pleading. "Please..." she whispered, gasping for breath, "...Ford, don't..." She may have been threatened with her life tonight, but that didn't mean she wanted to see death. Not for anyone.

"Why not?" He still looked steadily at the man. Looking away would mean that he'd give up his firm grip on the man's psyche, and he wasn't willing to do that."He could have shot you. Or you, man behind the counter."

Although... Now that he had all the time he pleased to properly go through the man's head, he could see that he'd never done anything really bad. This wasn't the first store he'd held up, but he'd never seriously hurt anyone. There were a bit of this and a bit of that, but nothing that warranted a death sentence. And it wasn't his job to deal with normal criminals.

But he was still unwilling to let the man go. Because teh sight of a gun pressed against Darcy's neck as set his blood to boil.

She couldn't answer him. She didn't have an answer. The man behind the counter promptly picked up the phone and dialed 911, giving the address first and then a quick explanation. Darcy felt some relief at that assurance, but she was still a crumbled mess on the floor. She wouldn't let herself be completely hopeless.

Forcing herself off the ground, she stood, shaking, but sturdy enough to step up beside Ford. She took his hand, knowing he wouldn't look at her so if he chose, he could feel what she felt. She was terrified, but she wasn't okay with a lot of violence. She knew that man wasn't okay and she knew that killing him didn't solve anything.

Fuck. With the cops on their way, Ford didn't have much time, no matter what action he chose to take. He was just about to make the man pull the trigger when he felt Darcy's hand in his. He nearly looked down, but halted himself just in time ( ... )

Ford took the gun, the robber dropped to the floor and Darcy couldn't see straight anymore, it seemed. She just let herself get dragged behind Ford as he did whatever was necessary to shut down the investigation. She was shaking, she was scared, she wasn't going to sleep tonight and now she'd have to deal with this shit too? Great, one more scar in her head to try and get past. Nothing was easy for her anymore, was it?

Though somewhere through all of that, holding Ford's hand gave her an eerie sense of calm.

It wasn't far to her home, than fucking God for small favors. A part of Ford wanted to go back and physically bead that drug-addled bastard to a bloody heap, but it wasn't possible now. And he couldn't leave Darcy there on the street, even if it was.

"Keys," he said when they came up to the door to Darcy's house. She still seemed out of it, and he didn't want to have to wait while she fumbled to get the door open.

The drive was short and as he dragged her up to her house and demanded her keys, she could do very little but obey. She dug into her purse, which miraculously made it out with her, otherwise there'd be an ID at the scene that she was there. Thank God for that, she figured. She held out the keys to him. There wasn't any way she'd have the dexterity to get herself inside. Not with the way her hands were shaking.

Ford's hands, on the other hand, were steady. He'd dealt with worse before, and he had been angrier. Though not by much, not lately.

Well inside, he let go of her. That cold, hard pressure of the gun against his back annoyed him, and he pulled it out to empty it of ammunition. "I never did like guns," he said, but his way of handling it said that he was used to them. With it being rendered harmless he put it in a pocket of his jacket again, but he put the ammo in a different pocket.

Once inside he let her go and she watched him unload the gun, stuffing them back in his pockets. He said something to her but she wasn't focused on that. This wasn't how robberies were supposed to be dealt with. She thought there was police involved and maybe the robber got away then there would be chases, but no, she had her own solution to the problem.

She was still, hands at her sides, staring blankly. She'd stopped crying, but she'd entered something like shock. Ever since Ford had been around, she'd seen things that she'd never thought she'd see. She'd lived through things that shouldn't be what they were. All she knew is that he'd saved her and she couldn't even move to try and thank him.

He looked at her, only now really seeing how blank her expression was. He was unsure if he'd ever really experienced shock, himself, and if he had he'd forgotten. "Hey. Don't shut down now." He shrugged out off his jacket and let it fall to the floor. He was probably going to have to be around for a while. She needed to be taken care of. This was what he said to himself. That he didn't want to leave, he completely ignored.

But what the hell was one supposed to do with someone in shock?

He led her into the living room and sat her down on the couch, crouching in front of her. "It'll be alright." It sounded sort of hollow. He just wasn't any good at comforting people.

He told her something else before his jacket dropped to the floor. She nodded, or at least she tried to, but she didn't know how much she actually moved her head. Ford took her into the living room and sat her on the couch. He crouched in front of her and she watched his face, comforted that he was there.

Darcy nodded again. After a moment she raised her hand, pressing her palm to her neck where the man had his gun. It still felt like it was there. It was still perfectly clear and she was now realizing how close to death she really was. One bad move, one unpredictable word and he'd have shot her.

But Ford had been there. He'd stopped it. He'd made the decision not to kill him - which honestly only would have terrified her more - and he saved her. Darcy shut her eyes and took a deep breath, "thank you."

He knew that she didn't much like to be touched. But he leaned up a bit to place his hand over hers where she covered her neck. He didn't have anything to say, though. What was he supposed to say? You're welcome? That didn't seem right. And he couldn't even berate her for getting herself into trouble. It hadn't been her fault.

So he just sighed, glad that she was alright.
