Making good use of the icon already - Heroes spec & reaction

While I was waiting for Heroes to start last night, and during commercial breaks, I was pondering that symbol. Yes, that symbol, the one that represents Kensei, the one that seems to represent death, the one that has hung around the Haitian's neck since we met him and that now hangs around Peter's.

We've been given three (I think) "explanations" of it. The first time it was actively acknowledged, rather than just appearing visually, was when Ando saw it on the sword and defined it as a combination of two kanji, together meaning "godsend." Every time it shows up in connection with Kensei, it can be explained away as being his crest - why he chose that as his crest is less clear, namely if it really was because of the kanji or if it was "coincidence," and therefore the same reason it shows up in all those other places.

The fact that Peter's tattoo turns into the symbol before it disappears is the most intriguing piece of evidence, together with the presence of the shape in Suresh's DNA sequences. Those both imply that the symbol is somehow a physical part of their abilities, hard-coded into their DNA. This kind of goes along with the explanation of the symbol as a DNA helix, which is one of the other explanations (but I don't remember what that comes from).

The third explanation is one that the Haitian's father gives him, of the snake and the crane, in one of the Heroes comics on the NBC site. Quick recap: A snake eats a crane because he wants to be able to fly, and he's successful, but then he "forgets the ground" and this is a problem. I feel kind of as though that represents Sylar - he takes other people's powers and forgets how to be a non-homicidal watch-maker.

The fact that it shows up in Molly's dreams and on the photos means no more than that someone is using it as a symbol. Whether that person knows what it "actually" means or only knows one facet of its usage is as yet impossible to say.

Okay, that's all, I didn't say it was conclusive pondering. :P

And now for last night's stuff...

Matt's dad is the bad guy! OMG! Apparently Matt didn't inherit the glowing red eyes.

I totally called the cheerleading excuse. I mean, it was kind of obvious, but still. :)

No Hiro? No Peter? I'm more sad about the first, but apparently the payoff for the second is Kristen Bell showing up (evidently as Veronica Mars, from the looks of the next-week-on). I was spoiled for that, but yeah. We'd also better get extra lots of Hiro next week. Oh, and while I'm on the topic of Peter, I get the feeling that I'm the only one who misses his floppy hair.
