"It's Daejeon!"

Aug 31, 2008 00:08

That's the slogan of the city I live in. It's posted all over the place (subway stations, malls...). I went to a soccer game the other night where everyone was wearing "It's Daejoen!" shirts. The score stayed at 0-0 until three minutes before the end of the game... and then Daejeon kicked the ball into their own goal and ended up losing. That display of epic fail actually made me really like this city... maybe I relate to epic fail? Anyway, it's Daejeon! Don't forget.

Two months in Korea, officially over and done with. They've been pretty intense, and I mean that in a good way... though there was a good deal of stress, especially during the first month. And I must say that the long hours make me really appreciate my weekends. But I'm already making progress on my student loans, and that is a GREAT feeling. Still no idea what I want to do with my life... I'll figure that out eventually.

What follows is a brief picture post (meaning, I have WAY more pictures that I will spam you with later):

The outside of my apartment building, or "villa" (or "billa"). The actual apartment buildings have more people in them. My building has around twelve apartments in it.

My living room. Currently only slightly less empty than it was when this picture was taken. Hopefully, soon I will have a nice sofa.

The buildings across from me. A lot of people have gardens... I'm not sure if they're personal gardens, or if they sell the produce to stores.

Noeundong, the neighborhood I live in. It's on the outskirts of Daejeon, so it's not as exciting as downtown, but I like it a lot. The blue sign that says "POLY" at the top of one of the buildings is where I work.

The Daejeon subways are REALLY clean.

SPIIIIIIIIIIDER. There's a bunch of these creepy HUGE spiders that live in this one spot about 50 feet away from my building. Everyday I walk by and it seems like there are more of them and they're getting bigger. If I start finding them right outside my window or in my house, I will not be cool.

Mountain! The person in front of me is Cynthia. She started work the same day as me, which was lucky. Usually that doesn't happen, because people are hired year round.

Mushroom Restaurant! It's supposed to be pretty popular. I haven't eaten there yet, but I am intrigued.

Temple on a mountain! It made me think of my mom. Because of the Buddhism.

A mountain path. There are a lot of mountains around here, and they're awesome for hiking. This one was particularly treacherous, as the rocks were very steep in some places, and they were wet from the rain/spring water.

Like most of the bugs here, this butterfly was HUGE (bigger than my hand). It was pretty, but it flew around like a total spaz and was kind of scary for that reason.

I'm having a pretty good time. I'm starting to like teaching, but it's not something I want to do as a career. I like the kids I teach. They read English better than I did when I was in kindergarten. Crazy. New semester starts on Monday! My Korean speaking ability is still pretty basic, but I'm working on it.

So far, I haven't played any StarCraft. Am I a failure? (I HAVE seen televised tournaments though.)
