1) I am not dead from alcohol poisoning (hurrah), although my sister was in pretty bad shape when i left the state, and she had to fly and THEN drive. poor kid. :/
I know some of you are interested in how the weekend went, and others are not. Some of you I have said things to, and really...it's a very long story, so here is an email that I sent to a friend that chronicles it all:
Thursday: I drove home in the snow. But there was only snow south of Richmond, which was a little bizarre. When I parked my car at my house, I had to kick the snow off my license plate, and it felt weird, because there really was no other snow. When I got home, I discovered I had 14 emails waiting in my inbox. And that was after not having sent any out that morning, and only being disconnected for about 6 hours. It doesn't sound as crazy when I write it like that, and many of them were list-serv things, but still. That's a lot of emails to have to go through. I helped my mom and aunt cook, and that evening we had 17 people come over for our "american" dinner of hamburgers and hot dogs, macaroni and cheese, and cupcakes for dessert. I drank 2 glasses of wine.
Friday: I slept in a little bit, worked on the slideshow that I was helping create for my grandmother's party (80 slides showing 90 years of life), and then was basically the "at home" person during the day. I picked my other grandmother up at the airport, helped set up for the party that would go on that night, and generally hung out. I believe I played a few songs on guitar hero as well. We had 42 people come over to our house to eat dinner. We cooked about 30 pounds of meat, and it was awesome. Since it was raining, but we were still grilling, we set up a tent in the back yard and had the grills sitting just outside that. There were 2 Webers, and one large "parilla" and oh...that food was SO good. Am attaching links to pictures. (
meat) and (
grill). There are other pictures on that site, but you'll have to go through them yourself. I got to see all the cousins who I haven't seen in years, and we just had so much fun. I drank 3 or 4 glasses of wine.
Saturday: I slept late, but didn't mean to, and so woke up sulky because i had to rush to prepare myself for the big family portrait that was being taken an hour and a half later. Going from 0 to hot in that little time was kind of crazy, but somehow, I pulled it off. The photographer was...amazingly gay - as in, at some point, someone said to one of my (girl cousins) "You look like a queen!" and he replied, "Thanks!". Very nice guy, who did an amazing job getting us all organized and smiling and EVERYTHING, but I'm amazed that my grandmother didn't notice...because that's the kind of thing she would be certain to comment on and make everybody cringe. After the photo session most of the grandchildren decided to go play soccer. Because I am not athletically inclined, I went as a driver (we drove to 3 separate fields before finding one we could play on), and as official photographer. Also on this field at one point: 10 deer. I have never seen so many in one place. We went back to respective houses to prepare for the party (and for me to watch UNC lose to NC State...which was depressing), and then to attend. I accidentally parked in front of Senator Byrd's security detail, got a slight talking to by the security guy, and somehow, my brother managed to make the biggest faux-pas by slamming the door in the MIDDLE of something the guy was saying. I hope this doesn't put me and my car on some kind of watch-list. I also forgot to bring my laptop for the slideshow, so had to run out and get it with my cousin. we had a lovely time at the party. i ate very little, and had...4 regular drinks, 2 glasses of champagne, 2 shots of tequila, and a shot of vodka. And once all the non-family guests left, our family danced up a storm. As in...turning the stereo up full blast, and getting down with our bad selves in the living room. I did not drive myself home.
Sunday: I had a hangover. But really...not as bad as it could have been. I'm pretty sure my sister threw up, and I believe I drank more than she did. Perhaps that means I have a higher tolerance than she does. People came over for breakfast/brunch, drank freshly squeezed (right there in our kitchen) orange juice (some people with more champagne- not me), and had lots of yeasty breakfast foods. I stuck to regular orange juice, but ate some monkey bread (SO GOOD), and a cheese danish. And went and picked up my car. And then, at 2 pm, I left to drive back to Chapel Hill. I ended up not watching the Super Bowl, which may make me shunned in some circles, but I have it taped on my DVR and plan on going back and watching the commercials at some point in the next few days, if that helps at all. (I have since watched about 2/3 of the program, and the commercials SUCK this year)
If you want the short version: the theme of the weekend was food and alcohol. I consumed a great deal of both. And the pictures are
here In other news, my shopping list looks like this: 1) stamps 2) hot dogs 3) hot dog buns 4) potato chips . I blame t. for #s 2, 3, and 4. Whoever thought up putting crushed potato chips on hot dogs is a GENIUS.
My classes make me laugh so hard. Yesterday, one professor walked into a classroom where the following was written on a board, and asked us what it meant, or what fit into the categories:
Best
Worst
Most Important
Most "Useful"
Most Difficult
One guy gave the answers, "UNC, Duke, Winning, Sportsmanship, and Sportsmanship." We then talked about basketball for 5 minutes or so. :)
In my rare books class, the professor was giving an example, and he brought up a books that was thought to be mildly pornographic (back in the day). This is what he said, "There's a picture of people...[trails off to indicate that it was a "naughty" picture]...so people said, 'Wow, that must be sexy', but of course, it isn't." That made me want to laugh so hard, and yet, when I write it, it's not so awesome. Perhaps you should know that the professor is a kind of old guy who is just adorable, and ... well...you don't expect him to talk about things being sexy.
And that's it for now. Because I should be preparing myself for going home...and buying stamps.
