-How you feeling, Jaejoong?, asked a voice coming from the door. Better, I hope?

The young prince turned his head to see his older brother standing in the doorway, a concerned look on his face. He rose from his bed where he had been laying.

-Yeah, better, he answered quickly. How is Changmin? Is he fine? Please, Yunho, tell me he is!
-Do not worry about your dragon friend, assured Yunho. He was severely wounded, but his life is not in danger anymore.

Jaejoong exhaled in relief as Yunho came to sit next to him on the bed.

-Thank heavens, murmured Jaejoong. In fact, no… Thank you, Yunho. Without your intervention, Changmin… they would have killed him. So, thank you. I owe you one.
-You have always been careless, little brother, answered Yunho, exasperated. I am quite used to taking care of the numerous messes you seem to create on a regular basis. Do you realize you put your life in danger out there?, he added angrily. Also, cannot you have a normal relationship? Must it be a dragon, really?

Jaejoong rolled his eyes to the ceiling and huffed. It took him a second to realize what was wrong with Yunho’s words.

-But… Wait, what do you mean, relationship, Yunho? You don't believe I’ve been bewitched by the bad dragon and shit?
-No, in fact, I don’t. I believe you. This dragon is different and obviously cares for my little brother, so I shall trust him. After all, what wrong has it done yet? None that I can tell.

Jaejoong was speechless and had to remember to breathe before he passed out. His jerk-ass brother who was always thinking himself superior to the rest of the world, who was constantly looking down on him and ordering him around actually believed him? Jaejoong opened his mouth to say something, but closed it when Yunho gave him a pointed look.

-Matters aside, said Yunho, smirking a little and rising up from the bed, you should go see your friend. Or are you more than friends already?
-What? No!, choked Jaejoong.
-Too bad. Well, they keep him in the dungeons. The guards should let you see him since he is trapped in human form without the possibility of morphing back to his reptilian self.
-So… You’re ok with me and Changmin together? Are you kidding?
-I must admit that the very idea of it is… utterly disturbing. But you love him, and he loves you. Who I am to go against love? By the way, if you guys are really still ‘‘only friends’’, stop being a coward and admit your feelings to him already.

The younger prince stared at his older brother as the latter gave him a superior grin and got out of the room, leaving the door open. Jaejoong quietly laughed and shook his head.

-I can’t believe it…

He smiled. Yunho would never change. Anxious to see Changmin, Jaejoong got up and made his way to the dungeons.

As Yunho had thought, the guards let him see Changmin, though he was not allowed to enter the dragon's cell for his own safety. The prince and the dragon, the latter constrained to his human form by the small prison cell, stared in each other’s eyes, pressed against the cold iron bars.

-Jae, breathed out Changmin in a somewhat weak voice.
-Changmin, you’re alright, I’m so relieved, said Jaejoong, taking Changmin’s hands through the space between the bars. They were a little cold, but Changmin, being a reptilian, had never had a high body temperature.
-I thought… I thought it was over, added the prince in a soft voice. I thought I had lost you.
-Me too.

They kept looking at the other without a word. Jaejoong’s heart was beating wildly in his chest just from seeing the dragon. Changmin looked pale and tired and had bandages around his torso, but otherwise he seemed fine. Jaejoong wanted to take him in his arms, to hold him tight and make sure that he was feeling well, but that was impossible at the moment. The guards would never allow him past those iron bars.

-Does it hurt?, asked the prince, eyeing Changmin’s chest. Is the doctor taking good care of you?
-He’s pretty scared of me, actually, quietly laughed Changmin. Almost wet his pants more than once. But he says I heal very quickly, faster than a human and I’m gonna be fine. How about you? Were you hurt?
-No, I'm perfectly fine. Don’t worry about me, Min.
-Can’t help it, murmured Changmin, taking a hand out of Jae’s to caress his cheek lovingly.

The prince swallow heavily. His heart was now beating so hard it seemed to pound everywhere in his body all at the same time as he stared at Changmin’s mouth.

‘Stop being a coward and admit your feelings to him already.’

‘Kiss me, maybe I’ll understand better.’

‘You mean a lot to me, Jae.’

Without a second thought, not even caring about the guards’ surprised gasp, Jaejoong suddenly leaned forward and caught Changmin’s mouth with his own. The other froze in surprise, lips unmoving and eyes wide, but his hand was still on the prince’s cheek, so Jaejoong took it as a good sign.

-Changmin, said the prince, mumbling against the younger’s lips, I love you.

Those words seemed to break the dragon’s immobility and he too pressed his lips against Jaejoong’s, closing his eyes and slowly moving his mouth. The guards looked at each other, baffled and unsure of how to proceed. One of them coughed to get the two lovers’ attention, but the prince and the dragon ignored them. They were both inexperienced, but Jaejoong felt like he had reached the heavens nonetheless. Changmin’s mouth was warm and intoxicating. He felt like he could have bended the iron bars and destroyed the entire cell just to reach out for him, to touch his hair and his skin, to press his body against his. He never wanted to be away from Changmin, from his precious Changmin. The whole world could crumble, could fall to pieces, and it wouldn’t have mattered at this very moment.

-I love you, he repeated in between kisses, hands reaching for Changmin’s hips from between the bars.
-I love you, I love you, replied Changmin with a deep slurred voice.

Jaejoong would have stayed like this forever, with Changmin’s thumb making slow circular motions against his cheek, but an outraged voice made them both jump and turn their heads so fast Jae thought he heard something crack in his neck. A furious Yoochun stood at the staircase, eyeing both the couple and the still unmoving guards.

-JAE! What the hell are you doing?!

The prince’s best friend’s voice was filled with disgust and fear, so much that it surprised Jaejoong. He had never heard anything like that in his friend’s voice, and it was directed at him!

-I…, started the prince.
-Do you realize how dangerously stupid this is?, said Yoochun, taking a step towards them and making Jaejoong tighten his grip on Changmin. When they told me where to find you, I was not expecting… How can you… kiss… this? It’s a dragon, Jae!
-Wait, you don’t understand! And… What are you doing here? How come you know about Changmin?

Yoochun suddenly stopped in his tracks, face blank. He took a deep breath before answering, eyes always fixed on Jaejoong’s.

-When I found out about you and that monster, I had no other choice but to tell! I had to protect you, Jae! That thing can hurt you, it can kill you!

Jaejoong felt all the air being expulsed out of his lungs. What had his best friend just said?

-It’s for your own good, Jae, explained Yoochun, eyes pleading. I know how you feel, I know you’re in love, believe me, I’ve seen you fall in love. But that’s a monster, ok? That's not right. You gotta break out of that spell, Jaejae! I’m here to help you.
-I can’t believe it, said Jaejoong in a breath.
-Just… just get away from it, kay? We’re gonna find a way to make it alright, I swear. We’ll break that charm. Just come with me, let’s go upstairs, please Jae…

Jaejoong’s fist connected with his jaw so fast that Yoochun never saw it coming and fell to the ground in surprise. Yoochun looked terrified and he was crying a little, but Jaejoong did not care. He kicked him in the stomach just before the guards grabbed at him to stop the fight.

-How could you?, screamed the prince in anger. I trusted you! You were my best-friend, Park Yoochun! How could you go behind my back like that! I could have been killed! Heck, Changmin could have been killed!
-But Jae, whimpered Yoochun.
-Shut up! Shut up, shut up, SHUT UP! I don’t wanna see your fucking face ever again! If I ever do, I’ll get my blade through your chest like they did to Changmin, get it? Don’t you ever show up in front of me again, you son of a bitch!

Jaejoong could only catch Changmin’s sorry eyes and Yoochun's shaking form on the ground before the guards took him upstairs and back to his room.

-Father?, asked prince Yunho.
-Yes, son, replied the emperor, sitting on his throne. Upon seeing Yunho’s serious expression, he furrowed his brows. Is there something bothering you?
-You and I need to talk, said the prince, taking a chair to sit near his father. It is about Jaejoong, and about the dragon.
-I have been speaking about this matter with a few wizards and mages, but none of them knew about such a charm like the one that has taken hold of our poor Jaejoong, I’m afraid.
-That is because there is no spell, no charm, no magic. Not in the way that you think, at least. Please, what I have to tell you... It is very difficult to accept, but it is something you must know. Do not interrupt me, and open your heart instead of your mind. I am begging you.

The emperor gave him a weird, yet concerned look, unsure of what was going on in his son’s mind. He nodded slowly.

-I promise. Tell me, and I shall listen with a fair heart.

Yunho’s palms were sweaty and he brushed them against his pants. Taking a deep breath, he started his explanation.

Prince Jaejoong was walking in circles in his room, anxiously biting the inside of his cheeks until a faint metallic taste filled his mouth. After kissing Changmin and hitting Yoochun, Jaejoong had been sent to his room. There was no way his father would not hear about the incident.

-Calm down, calm down, Jae said to himself out loud, as if it could somehow help him to do that. Even if Father knows, what can he do? He still thinks I’m tied to Min by some stupid spell, so he wouldn’t hurt him. Plus, I kissed Min, so it’s not his fault, right? But what if Father decides that we can’t see each other anymore? I’m so faking being sick until he lets me…

Three heavy knocks on the door nearly made the prince jump out of his skin.

-What?, he almost barked.
-Son?, asked his father’s voice as the emperor opened the door.

He entered and closed the door behind him, motioning for Jaejoong to sit on the bed.

-You and I need to talk, said the emperor in a serious voice.
-This is about Changmin and I, isn’t it?
-Changmin?
-The dragon, explained the prince. My dragon, he added with in a bold tone, accentuating the possessive pronoun.

Jaejoong’s father shifted uncomfortably.

-Yes, about the dragon, indeed. Your brother and I had a long talk about this infatuation you have, and Yunho told me that… that there is no charm, and that you love the dragon. I must know: is this true?
-It is, answered the prince in a defiant voice.
-I see. Yes, I see it in your eyes, this determination. Understand me, son. As en emperor, I want what is best for my people, but as your father, I want what is best for you and that will always come first. I want you to be at peace, to have a safe life, to be loved and to be happy. Only, this… this love… it can only lead to pain and sorrow.

Jaejoong felt forming tears tickle the corner of his eyes at seeing his father’s sincere and sad face, but it was quickly destroyed by a wave of anger and frustration. His hands curled into fists and he took a deep breath before answering.

-You don’t understand. You should. You’ve been in love. I've known Changmin since he was a baby, and he’s never hurt anyone. I came to see him as a son, a friend, and recently as a lover. You can only see him as a beast! Open your eyes! You’re wearing blinds!
-How dare you talk to me with that tone?
-What are you gonna do, now? Kill him? I’ll kill myself. Chase him away? I’ll run off with him. You can’t lock me up in a golden tower, Father. You know you can’t.

The emperor’s shoulder fell and he sighed, looking down.

-Yes, son. Yes, I can. You are my son, and I love you, but this madness has to stop. Tonight, I shall free the dragon. If it leaves, I shall not hurt it. If it comes back, it shall be treated as any other dragon on this kingdom.
-Father! No!, screamed the prince, getting up and gripping his father’s arm in a desperate attempt to make him listen to his pleas.

However, the man only looked at him with teary eyes and called the guards. He instructed them to stay in the room and watch over Jaejoong who was now a crying mess, gripping him weakly.

-That’s not fair! How can you do this? Won’t you listen to me? Won’t you believe me?, he cried.
-You will thank me in the future. Hate me now, if you must, answered the emperor.
-Can’t I even say goodbye?
-I am deeply sorry, son.

That night, Jaejoong watched by the window as he saw Changmin’s elegant silhouette against the landscape lighted by the moon until it disappeared in the forest past the silver river, sobbing endlessely. His heart ached at the thought that this might be the last time he saw Changmin. No, he thought, he would not let it happen, could not let this be the last time. In a month, he would convince his father that he was over Changmin. In two months, he would run away, escape towards the forest past the silver river, and he would find his love again. Gathering all the air in his lungs, the prince screamed towards the stars twinkling in the sky, hoping for the dragon to hear him.

-CHANGMIN! I LOVE YOU! WHEREVER YOU ARE, I’LL NEVER STOP LOVING YOU! BELIEVE MY WORDS, CHANGMIN! I LOVE YOU AND NOTHING, NO ONE ELSE MATTERS!!!

In his heart, he added: Wait for me, Changmin.

AN: This is the end of the first part of the story! I know it's been a while since I can’t write a lot these days. I have so much school work to do. I’m sorry for all of you readers who have been following the story and hope you didn’t get bored by the wait. I decided to take some time off from my work to write the conclusion to that first part, so that I could continue in a more logical manner when I finish this hectic period of me crumbling under drawings and projects.
