Egyptian Lover (yah!!!) Zurich Dachkantine Jan 27th
WOW! That was one of the best nights i have had in a very long time! Long time hero Egyptian lover was in town to play a dj set in the last month of the dachkantine venue. Along side was electro pioneer Max Durante from Italy and local djs like tres amigos (john player and friends) P.Bell and Spectron from Berne. Arrived at about 12.30 already a good crowd going and a worryingly increasing smoke cloud.
At this time the tres amigos were playing. They are 3 djs in a collective playing mostly old school electro, hip hop, italo and what not. Really fun djs and a lot of great music i like! At 1.30 the LOVER came on with his sidekick jamie jupiter there too with a bit of occasional microphone work and fulfilling the job of handing the LOVER the records. He started off with 2 records simultaneously. I could see this well since i was down the front observing closely while dancing :D One record going backwards and the other one with NUMBERS playing. I recognised about half of the tracks he played. Quite a bit of Kraftwerk, his old songs like Dance and Egypt Egypt, some from his new album, Cybotron Clear, Man Parrish, Nucleus etc etc.... Most instrumental numbers and mostly fitting into the OLD SKOOL ELECTRO Catagory! probably 90% of the people in dachkantine had never heard from him but there was a core crowd of about 25 people down the front dancing hard to every song and having a great time!! He played for all of 2 hours before going off to big applause! I must say his dj skill was amazing. Its not until you see someone like this and realise what djing is all about. None of playing one track and mixing the next into the end... He scratched, cross faded and brung bits of tracks into the mix minutes before the main track played. This is what its all about!!! the best thing of all though was that i got the final record ("Party") that he played he handed it to me at the front :)
Afterwards Max Durante came on in the main room continuing the electro theme, but following the LOVER would never be an easy task... There were 2 other rooms. One room playing a bit more typical electro pop, electro house stuff and the 3rd room playing NU SKOOL electro with some really banging beats.
After his set the LOVER made a signing session and sold some stuff in the backroom! So i bought the new album and got it signed "To Graeme from the Egyptian lover". Also picked up a few posters and got one signed too :) He is a really friendly and easy going guy it seems. I was really on a high! It was funny seeing all the tough trendy djs acting like kids on christmas day getting stuff signed!!
So then went to dance some, in the main room and the 3rd room. Although i was a little wary of leaving my precious signed records and poster lying around so we left the dachkantine at 6AM. The party was still in full swing and i could have stayed till the end, but was also glad to get my records back in one piece without any beer spilled over them!!
