I finally have a 'driving story' now, and my mom seems to think this is hilarious. I have to admit to finding it amusing myself. Also, all brought on by nothing but my own idiocy

LOL!! I guess there are some situations where I'm the laid back one and you the panicky one. :)
I totally understand what you mean about how after being so attached to the friendship, seeing it tainted isn't something you like to see in a movie. I found that as well - it was a really painful and difficult scene, finding that out - and I was actually really upset. (I think it's probably a good idea that you don't watch it actually: the scene where you find it out is very drawn out and you find piece of information after piece of information until it finally dawns on Toto and us that that is what happened. Really clever in retrospect, but not easy to take. I think another thing the second act of the movie (teen Toto) did was to make Elena just as important a part of his life and the movie as Alfredo so that his love of movies as represented by Alfredo was set against his personal life and true love, and whether the two could co-exist, or would come into conflict with each other. Obviously the message that if you want to follow up your ambition in movies, you'll have to be without true love is not the most uplifting one in the world - but Elena says that the movies Toto made still made her so happy, so it had a nice subtext of saying that even if you can't be with the one you love, you can still make them happy through movie. :)
Oooh, I must have missed the Red Storm Rising recommendation. I should still have time for this sort of reading - so will check it out. I've still not picked up the second Jane Austen books I was gonna read... I suck! Though since finishing my last novel I have actually been reading philosophy. So strange for me to actually be reading around the subject I'm studying. *g*
I don't think you're quibbling over semantics; I think the whole idea of 'love' and indeed 'in love' are so unclear as to fit outside the realm of semantics entirely. :p What distinguishes a crush and being in love with someone? What distinguishes being in love with someone and just thinking you're in love with someone? Etc, etc. It's so complicated. *g* If I had a better understanding of any of that I'd probably be able to give a better judgement of whether I believe in love at first sight or not. On the other hand, maybe love shouldn't be a definable thing, maybe it's best left as it is - with no one really understanding it, but many people feeling it. This topic always gets me babbling! Of all topics! *g*
Sorry for the delay - I went 5 days or so without replying to anything anywhere. Tut tut Daps! :D
