I've been doing pretty good lately being nicer to myself this year with the bike commutes, and it has been paying off. I've been pretty consistent getting in three rides a week, haven't quite made four yet. I do what I can and that's what counts, keeps me motivated and keeps the committee meetings in my head from detering me from riding. Losing an inch off the hips also helps with the motivation. I'm slowly getting stronger and my times are getting faster. When I started at the end of May my morning rides were typically 45 minutes, average speed at 23kph. This morning, with no wind and a fellow cyclist to set a great pace, my ride was only 38 minutes, average speed at 28kph. I enjoyed the chase and it felt great!
There are a couple of activities I love, that I can't help but push myself at because I like to go fast: cycling and skiing. Speed is an integral part of both sports that I love. And I've been quite happy with my motivation so far this summer. The challenge becomes figuring out how to carry that over into the winter. Biking to work and back is such an easy way to incorporate exercise into my life. In the winter I have to go out of my way, make a point of exercising. Well, perhaps the attitude evident in the previous sentence is a place to start. Maybe, like with the biking, I just need to be nicer to myself and not set up unreasonable expectations. Set myself up for success rather than failure. I will need to think more on that....
