hmmm. I fucked up the spinach tonight. I usually get it right, though it seems to be a finnicky vegetable to cook
I trash-picked a copy of High Fidelity last night along with two reggae magazines from 1985
I went to Jacob's experimental noise show at the Harvard University radio station last night - he's on a mini tour right now. Tonight they play the Zeitgeist - tomorrow maybe the Fly Wheel? or Providence. I forget.
Jacob played a saxophone into a microphone connected to his laptop. he wrote a program that ran the sax through crazy loops and buffers. it also added pre-programmed beats behind it. the sound was nuts and really neat. he was also really really into it and blowing extremely hard on the sax. his set rocked.
there were several other acts including a couple of guys who had hooked up these wires so that when you held them they would produce one tone, and when you touched another person holding one it would produce other tones. some kid was playing a penny whistle while all that was taking place.
one group, the Secret Hippies, had a pre-recorded CD along to which they sang duets. Some of the lyrics went like this:
"I am a waffle"
"I am some pancakes"
"I want to eat you because you taste good"
"Why do you want to eat me? It will make me hurt"
this was pure genius.
then there were two guys who played acoustic guitars in a very sad sappy manner. this was nothing experimental, it just added to the disjointed feel of this very eclectic show.
and two girls played along to some pre-recorded talking. the talking was all about taxidermy. I really liked their set. one girl had an acoustic guitar and the other girl had some sort of bell she would hit with a mallet.
throughout the show random weirdness ocurred - a lot of it was like some sort of vocal game you would play with little kids. one person would start making a whooping noise or something and then other people mimicked or did their own variation on it. this added a very hippy-ish vibe to the night. it also made me think about the stuff the drama kids would do before a performance when I was playing guitar in the musical band. some of it was supposed to be like "vocal warm up" and some of it was goofy crap they did as a tradition.
thank god tomorrow is friday.
I had another serious headache today. it wasn't as bad as the one on saturday, so I'm not classifying it as a migraine. but it was exhaustingly annoying and painful from like 8:30 am until 2:00 pm. on saturday I was all sorts of fucked up and nauseated. I woke up to pounding pain and basically couldn't function for an hour or more.
I started using the sewing machine that Marie gave me - essentially it's pretty cool, but the thread keeps breaking. I'm not sure if it's the tension or simply that the thread sucks.
