man, yet another awesome weekend.
Friday night I came home and got extremely extremely relaxed and felt really good.
Saturday I drove out and had lunch with my parents. The Chinese restaurant in Sharon started serving Pad Thai which is slightly funny since it's Thai food, not Mandarin food. I mean, the place is called Mandarin Taste after all. However, their Pad Thai was totally amazing. In addition to lunch my parents gave me a new cell phone since mine died on me. My dad decided to get creative, but it's pretty overboard. He bought me the Nokia N'Gage QD which is basically a video game with a cell phone built into it. It's frustrating as FUCK to figure out how to use it. There's no instruction booklet with it because it's supposedly "self explanatory". Anyhow, it is awesome that I can play Tony Hawk Pro Skater on my cell phone during my lunch breaks, but I think I'd rather just have a phone. this thing is kinda clunky and not comfortable to talk on, etc.
After lunch I drove out to Northampton and spent the weekend with Serge and Marissa. We ate at the Smith dining hall which was interesting. It's been a long long time since I've been surrounded entirely by women (with the exception of Serge). The food was pretty good, and I took full advantage of it again in the morning. I sorta felt like a mooch, but then I was like, "wait, how do you mooch off of an all you can eat dining hall?" they let the students take as much food as they want back to their dorm rooms. We did a lot of talking about the oddities and weirdness that surrounds women's colleges like how the girls interact and why it makes no sense for girls who want to be boys to go to all-girls schools. If you want to be a guy then I would assume you shouldn't be at a school for women. But I think part of it is that Smith is no longer an all-girl school. In addition to being a women's college, it serves the purpose of being a haven for genetically female gender benders. So why don't they admit or seek out guys who want to be girls? whatever, this could go on forever. haha. it's too confusing.
We went to a party at Hampshire college which turned out to be very awesome. We danced all night to some good music. The mix if people was fun - artsy hipsters, dreadlocked hippies, some dude passed out in a chair the whole time, some Italian Stallion type dude doing the DJing and taking his shirt off every once in a while. One girl there studies Russian and just came back from St Petersburg. She knew all about Leningrad and she went to see them at the Middle East on Friday. I would have gone, but I just couldn't afford it again this year. I was going to get her address so I could send her Russian CDs but she forgot or she was tipsy or something. I wanted to see Serge get really trashed because he would have been so out of control. haha. but he had to limit himself since he was driving. he shaved with somebody's razor and she saw him doing it and was like "well, looks like I'll need to buy a new razor" and then he was going to shave his eyebrows off because I had drawm them on with a sharpie but he held himself back. I gave him a permanent raised eyebrow because he can't raise one eyebrow at a time. We went to the liquor store that he used to live above and there were some girls who were a little weirded out by the drawn on eyebrows. Hanging with Serge two weekends in a row was really awesome. I miss having him around all the time and I was just thinking tonight about how we used to make dinner together when he was living here in Boston. I was even thinking tonight that maybe I'll move out to Amherst for a little while before I leave Massachusetts. but who knows. After the party we went to the Whately diner. It was a lot of fun because we brought some of Marissa's friends who had never been there before. they were really excited about the whole thing and they made some guys sit with us. they were about to leave, but the girls insisted that they sit down and hang out. On sunday Marissa and I saw one of them in Amherst center and he was really surprised.
Marissa and I visited Serge at work - I bought three records which Serge charged me $5 for. One was a Gruppo Sportivo EP. I've seen this band around a bunch, but never heard them. The EP came out in 1979 so I would sort of describe it as new wave, but I'm not sure how to describe it. I like it a lot though, In the $2.00 LP section of the store I pulled out a Kino LP which is fucking amazing! Apparently Serge never thought to look through those records. It's just a huge wall filled with shelves of LPs. they're slightly better than the average garbage you see when you're digging through record tables at flea markets and stuff, though I'm sure all the true gems have been picked out. except of course when it's an obscure Russian new wave band that the record store might not know about. Thus I got to reap the profits. I also grabbed the Helloween album "Keeper of the Seven Keys". this is mostly for novelty purposes. I deffinitely take metal seriously, but it's hard for me to find metal that I really like a lot. Who knows, maybe this will grow on me. It's supposed to be a true metal masterpiece.
finally we left Amherst and started driving back to Northampton, and Marissa and I decided to stop at this vintage store that we had never been to. It's called Glamourpuss and it's on route nine in Hadley. Marissa found an awesome dress that is like a sweater on the top and a pleated skirt on the bottom. total librarian chic. It looks excellent on her. I found a few things, but used my best judgement and didn't spend any more money. there was a super skinny leather tie from the 80s, a nice skinny 1930s looking tie, a cookbook on ways to prepare bananas, and some copies of USSR magazine. who knows, maybe they'll be there if I go back. In the same plaza as this boutique was an Asian food store which Marissa and I were very impressed with. they were selling something called "Duke's Masala Soda" which I bought, but have not tried yet. I'm very excited about it. I want to take pictures of the soda before I open it. I've begun my preliminary brainstorming for the soda zine that Nick and I are going to make. They were also selling Thums Up and Limca. YES. Then there was also a Mexican bodega in the SAME plaza as these two other fine establishment, and they had rad stuff too. I bought Mirinda, which is a soda that I had once before and remember liking a lot. I can't remember if it's supposed to be Mandirin orange flavored or Tamarind flavored. again, I have to take pictures of it.
