veronica mars (etc.)

I've begun three new shows and they are: The United States of Tara, How I Met Your Mother, and Veronica Mars.

The United States of Tara is quite good. It's helplessly comparable to Weeds, being a Showtime 30-minute series about a crazy woman and her family in the suburbs, and as much as I love Toni Collette (quite a bit), no one's quite as dynamic as Mary Louise Parker in that kind of role. Mary Louise Parker really just has an insane amout of gravitas. However, I think Toni Collette's lacking might be due to the fact that she has to share her talent with four roles at once. She's brilliant at, totally emersed in all of them, but I really just want Tara. And it makes me very sad when it seems like her kids or her husband doesn't necessarily want Tara. Her son is gay with little Andy Lawrence, from the Disney Channel all those years ago, which is super cute. Her daughter's really hot. It's a good show. Not quite Weeds, but a good show.

HIMYM isn't so much new as continued. I enjoyed, but wasn't thrilled with it when I watched the first ten or so episodes of first season some months ago. However, I wsn't in love with Neil Patrick Harris then. His adorability really improves the quality. I'm still kind of annoyed with the whole concept of the show - if my dad sat me and my brother down to tell me how he met our mother in aimless little descriptions of other things, I'd have wanted to cut off his ears. However, framing voiceover, kids-look-at-the-camera-which-sounds-like-Bob-Saget disregarded, it's pretty funny. And I love NPH. And Alyson Hannigan.

And then there's Veronica Mars. Why did I wait to watch this show? It is so fantastic. The editing is not great (I think editing quality matters to me more than most) and Veronica's flashback long hair is kind of bad to the point of distraction, but everything else is gold. I'm glad I was prepared to want Veronica and Logan together (fandom-named LoVe - how adorable is that? except that I associate the first name in a pairing fusion title as the dominant - thanks to Gundam Wing, stupid anal fandom that it was (anal-ha!) - and Veronica totally wears the pants in that relationship. Okay, I'm only on episode 5, so maybe she doesn't obviously rock so much harder when they're actually friendly, but I think she probably does) because now every look they give one another is the cutest thing in the world. They put a transexual in the second episode. Boys talk about the gross things they actually talk about. There's a very intrieging mystery.

May I say again (or maybe for the first time) that all station-owned online viewing things are crap and Megastic's high quality seven-part split of shows is so perfect. Use Megastic!
