A lot of my friends overseas (most are non-Pinoys) are asking what is the best way to help victims of Typhoon Ondoy. Without thinking twice, I automatically say "Philippine Red Cross." I see how they work. They're effective. And they work real fast.
Last Saturday I witnessed first hand how the PNRC
works as a blood bank. They were able to help me get a rare blood type for a child in my daughter's school who was suffering with dengue. I would donate blood to the Red Cross if I could. But I can't. I've already had blood transfusion before.
It was amazing to see famous people respond to help victims. And I'm not talking about local celebrities being filmed while handing out relief goods on site (I'm sure they mean well... but it just doesn't do it for me anymore. It appears like a big PR gig, even if they are sincere. I have a problem with PDC = public display of charity.) I'm talking about people like the author Paulo Coelho. I've never read any of his books, but he seems to be a cool guy. Check out his Twitter page a day after the flood.

I wonder if his Twitter update forced the local Red Cross to allow online donations. They need tech support or online experts. Even Chuvaness' site can accept online donations. And it seems everyone (except me and the PNRC then) has a PayPal account. There is now a temporary provision for online donations to the PNRC via PayPal, in cooperation with a third party.
Online donations now allowed at the Red Cross:
