Dearest Mavis,

It's one consolation in this horrid mess - I would have missed you and Mary-Lou so terribly much. Do you really think I'm as lovely as all that? But we'll be friends forever, won't we, darling?

Please take this with you. Oh, I hope he doesn't think it's too silly for words! I'll never forget you've done this for me, dear heart. Tell me everything Adric says and does.

XXXXXXXXXX Daphne.

Darling,

Please forgive me for this dreadful mess. It's that terrible friend of Clarissa's - I don't know why your family ever allowed them to become so close. Please... term is almost over, and then we can do things properly. Just wait a little longer.

Everything is utterly dreaful. There's been police here, and no one seems to know why. Do you suppose - but we didn't do anything wrong! Not very wrong. And poor Clarissa is ill but, dear, don't worry about your precious cousin - you know she's delicate.

Adric, Bill is being awfully queer about that brother of hers, and not wanting me to mention him to anyone. I can't work out what goes on in that idiotic boyish head of hers - but I suppose I should ask you to be quiet about him too. Even though it's awfully tempting to get back at Bill, there's Clarissa to think of, and I know you wouldn't do a thing to harm her.

I'm so glad I'm a real girl. I suppose you are, too. Heaven knows you're more ladylike than Bill oh dear I suppose you wouldn't find that flattering after all

I'm sending this with Mavis. Be very, very nice to her. It's so important that she likes and trusts you, or we'll have no go-between - Mary-Lou is a darling but she doesn't understand. But you'll like Mavis, of course! So pretty, with auburn hair like your cousin, and she's the most terribly talented opera singer. She's going to do great things, we all know it. Maybe you could help her? You must know people who could help get her started - you're so sophisticated. It would be a charming way to thank her for helping us, don't you think, if you could introduce her to someone who might help?

Oh, when we're married, perhaps I could hold salons and help people like Mavis! Beauty and charm should work towards talent, you know.

I'm babbling too much - Adric I miss you. I know you simply wouldn't do any of the dreadful things Bill suggests.

all my adoring love,
XXXXXXXX Daphne
