Tsunami and True Family Facts

Alright, I'm a Cali girl, but not a southern Cali girl. I'm from Crescent City, CA which is a very small city up toward the northern most part of California.

Our claim to fame is the 1964 Tsunami which was so destructive do to the geography of the placement of Crescent City. That particular incident let to locals developing a healthy dose of paranoia concerning Tsunami's because we would grow up hearing stories of the devastation it caused.

In fact my grandmother gave birth to my aunt during the flood. The story I heard, the family had been visiting some friends during the day from their home in Klamath a small town 20 miles south. After the first wave hit everyone got the all clear so the family decided to head back home. On their way out of town the biggest wave hit and their car got hit with a log and my grandmother went into labor.

They had to turn around to get to the hospital, which was an extremely difficult task because of the conditions, and when they finally got there my grandmother had to give birth in a hallway because there were no beds to put her in. She claims to have only been in the hospital for all of half an hour.

Of course six months later the '64 flood happened, and the family lost their home because they lived in the Klamath glen which was in the valley formed by the Klamath river. 1964 was a bad water year for Del Norte County. (Interesting side note: locals don't pronounce the county name the Spanish way, we leave the e in Norte silent. It's always jarring to hear how outsiders pronounce it.)

Hope my ramble was interesting to those of you that read it. I'm currently spending the day with my family as half the town and all the schools are shut down.
