Bengal Tiger served as mascot since 1990 2THEADVOCATE.COM AND THE ADVOCATE STAFF Published: May 18, 2007 - UPDATED: 2:30 p.m.LSU's mascot, Mike the Tiger has died.The royal bengal tiger, Mike V, died at 2:23 a.m. Friday morning, said Ginger Guttner, public relations spokesperson for the LSU School of Veterinary Science.Mike V made his first game appearance during an LSU-Alabama basketball game in 1990, according to the LSU Web site. He was the third-longest serving mascot in school history.LSU announced in March that Mike V was entering his first phase of retirement. That meant he wouldn’t be approached by the student mascot any more in an attempt to make him roar at football games. Mike had slowed down over the past year and a half, losing weight and muscle, officials said.

Born Oct. 18, 1989, Mike V was given to LSU by Dr. Thomas and Caroline Atchison of the Animal House Zoological Park in Moulton, Ala. according to the LSU Web site.

Mike V, who moved into a new home on August 27, 2005, served as the official mascot of LSU Athletics from 1990 until his death Friday.  He had moved into the old habitat on April 30, 1990.

Mike attended his first sporting event on February 21, 1990, when he was introduced to a crowd at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center for a men’s basketball game, according to a press release by the LSU Athletic department.  The Tigers beat Alabama that day, 75-69, in Shaquille O’Neal’s freshman year.“Mike V was a noble mascot who was loved by Tiger fans young and old, and he represented all that is proud and dignified about LSU,” said LSU athletic director Skip Bertman.  “Mike has reigned over a magnificent era of Tiger Athletics and he is missed today by LSU fans the world over.”During his tenure, Mike V reigned over a football national championship, five baseball national championships and a remarkable 23 track and field championships.  He saw LSU sports teams win 37 Southeastern Conference titles from 1990 to 2007.Mike V succeeded Mike IV who served as LSU’s mascot from 1976-90
