After Tax Season and Finals update

May 13, 2009 11:18

Well I was going to post an update just after Tax Season ended, but then of course school really started heating up ramping up to finals. I handed in my last final this morning so I have a short break before summer school starts.

Tax Season was about what I expected. There were a few days where I worked 12-14 hours. I worked Saturdays and Sundays for about 3 weeks before the 15th, with the exception of Easter Sunday. The only reason I didn't work Easter was because I left my badge sitting on my desk the day before and you can't get into the building without it. I think I worked a total of 150 hours of overtime from January 15 to April 15. It would have been more but on April 16 I was working and figured out that I already had 42 hours for the week and decided to go home early and didn't come in at all on April 17. They only bad thing that I have to say about the experience is that going to school, even for only two nights a week, was too rough. I'll be happy when I finally get my degree in December so that next year I won't have that. Given that in 41 days I will have been at my new job one year, I have really enjoyed it. I have met other people who did public accounting for a while and it wasn't for them so they switched to industry or even changed careers altogether. I don't see myself doing either one of those. For one I have already changed careers once going from AT&T to here.

As I briefly mentioned I am still on tract to get my Master's in December. I will be taking 3 classes this summer, well 4 if you count the Ethics class I have to take at DBU, and 3 classes this fall. I'm a little worried about taking all the classes over the summer because I also want to prepare to sit for two parts of the CPA exam in August. I plan on taking a graduate level Audit class at UTA as part of my degree program and using that class supplemented with a Becker Audit review book, prepare to take the Audit portion of the CPA exam in either late July or early August. Then I will use the month of August to study for the Business Ethics portion and take it at the end of August. In the Fall I am going to take Financial Statement Analysis and use that to get ready to sit for the Financial Accounting test in January. Then study in January for the Regulation test. If I am able to pass all four parts on the first try, that will give me my Master's in December and done with the testing portion of the CPA in January. Meaning next tax season all I will have to focus on is work. Which will be a very nice change of pace. I haven't had a semester, spring, summer or fall, without school in 3 years. I think I am going to be a little lost going straight home from work!

Other than work and school my life is pretty empty right now. I've gone to the movies to see Wolverine and Star Trek. Wolverine was about what I expected just a short action flick. Star Trek on the other hand was soooo much better than I expected and I expected a lot. I loved the story line and all of the action sequences. And of course I love how JJ Abrams completely gave away the entire plot to Star Trek in the Fringe episode that aired the week it came out.
