Gee... okay... The Big Three each flew to D.C. to tell Congress they were out of money and wanted a "loan"... each on private corporate jets. Three Jets, traveling to the same place, at the same time, for the same purpose... Then all this "please help us" ad propaganda... I wonder, seriously, how much this video you just posted cost?
Speaking from personal friendships with GM employees, I can say with certainty that the Big Three is facing financial uncertainty, and are strapped for cash. And They also having figured out in the remotest possible sense what to do about it. They're like a teenage girl shopaholic with a credit card... and when they buy almost everything they have ever wanted, and spend more than they have on stuff they don't need, they go whining to mommy and daddy (in this case, us, the taxpayer) that they need more money.
Someone needs to teach them economics. When you shut down a plant, move operations out of the U.S., and layoff employees, the employees no longer have jobs, which creates a negative impact on the economy, because people without jobs and those who have jobs and their jobs face an uncertain future.... you know, like those GM employees who received a letter from GM advising instead of a Christmas bonus this year, GM is going to lay them off the day before Christmas... those employees and former employees, the supplier employees and supporting industry employees who see this coming, they aren't going to go out and spend money. The only people who go shopping and spend money (and by the way, for those that aren't aware, going shopping is a great way to boost the economy and stabilize jobs), are those that have never had to worry where their next paycheck is coming from.
Honestly? the Big Three need to wake up, quit acting stupid, and learn how to spend their money wisely and thriftily... They also need to realize that they boost their own personal gains when they buy American and build American. And while we're at it, so does the U.S. government.
How many of the Big Three fat cats said, hey, you know what, I don't need 16 houses, 85 cars, my own plane, a boat, and a multi-million dollar a year salary. How many of them actually woke up this morning and said you know what? I could seriously live happily on less than half of what i make per year?
Oh... you know what... Ford CEO Alan Mulally says he'll work for $1 per year if the automaker has to take any government loan money.
Did you also notice by any chance that GM is the one spearheading the OMG! we're dying! Give us money!!! propaganda? Yeah. Haven't seen the same good faith statements from GM. Then again, I don't trust Ford's CEO unless we can get that in writing... perhaps with federal charges if he negates on his statements.
Oh, and frenchblog, I agree with what you stated as well on the UAW... They are not without blame. Management-on-high is by far the worst when it comes to unnecessary spending, but the UAW pushing for honestly higher than average pay for an average job and striking when they don't get their way is the same as a two year old throwing a temper tantrum. So all in all, the Big Three, and the Unions behind them, are all our children... would you as the parent give them money after they maxed out your credit cards, burned down your house, and wrecked your car? (analogy to total economic failure)
What everyone should say to themselves when they face economic crisis.
"It's not what we want, but what we need that counts"
Yeah, Kat and I, barring some miracle, aren't expecting presents from each other. If it comes to paying our bills or buying guitar hero for PS2, paying our existing bills and working thriftily on a very limited budget is the only thing important.
You know, there was a time when unions were actually needed but that time has passed. Unions were started to improve workplace safety and improve the general conditions in the workplace and to give workers a better quality of life - better pay, insurance benefits, paid time off and so on. NOW there are federal laws protecting workers, so there really is no need for unions. (Hopefully there are no mob bosses reading this)
Oh, and there was something in the news the other day that the execs of the Big Three petitioned the FAA to keep it hush-hush when they fly around in their private jets. I guess they didn't appreciate all the flack they were getting in the media.
