Mozzie Character Sheet
There are many things of which a wise man might wish to be ignorant.
HISTORY
The only true fact about Mozzie is that he was abandoned in front of a church and raised in a group home called Brush Park Home for Children in Detroit run by Isaac Jeffries. His only true possession is a teddy bear with a tag name of Mozart. Everything else he tells you is likely a lie or a truth with a lot of lying tossed in. No one knows his real name, including Neal and Isaac but Mozzie is as close as it gets.
Mozzie was never formally adopted but he did go to a nice foster family in Sterling Heights when he was 11 years old when the couple’s son set him up to be the fall guy for some stolen family jewelry. He lived on the streets ever since and ran numbers with a con named Bruno. When he was twelve, he had the largest numbers of runners in the city and used Bruno as the front man but after Mozzie stole 500k from DeLuca, Detroit mob, Bruno sold him over and he couldn’t be the Dentist of Detroit anymore. Mozzie reinvented himself and ran away to New York in 1981 which is where he met Neal when Mozzie was running a Find the Lady scam with his then partner. Neal was very good and Mozzie knew that he’d found the person to work the long con against Vincent Adler that he’d been planning.
When the “Suit”, Peter Burke, finally caught Neal and sent him to jail, Mozzie wasn’t at his trial, nor did he visit him. It wasn’t lack of caring but there is a code between grifters. Mozzie is there to help Neal when he needs it after Neal’s ‘arrangement’ with the suit despite his mistrust for the FBI. He has even reluctantly come to like the Burkes, though his wife Elizabeth more than the agent.
APPEARANCE
Mozzie’s greatest talent is that he blends in anywhere. He truly is the embodiment of don’t judge a book by its cover. To take a look at his under six foot, stocky frame with balding hairline and glasses, you’d think he was just an average Joe. Someone that you wouldn’t be able to pick out of a police lineup or give much of a description if you were a witness to one of his many crimes. He’s the invisible man in many ways. The man behind the curtain, using front men to be the Great and Powerful Oz.
PERSONALITY
Mozzie learned at a very young age that knowledge was power and knowledge was used to survive. He rarely angers and prefers flight to fight, but Mozzie is first and foremost a survivor. When he ran away from his foster family he knew that no one would go to a kid to run numbers so he got Bruno to be the front man and it was a habit he continued to use with Neal as his front man. Though with Neal it’s more of a partnership, but he’s still the charming mask of their cons even if Mozzie has his own brand of charm.
It is a testament to how close Mozzie thinks of Neal that he overcame his distrust of the FBI to help Neal out with Peter. He is a classic conspiracy theorist, even owning a DVD called Moon Landing, Fact or Fiction and a taster canary called Sweet Darnell. Mozzie is a lot more intelligent than one would think at first glance. He can do Rubik’s cube in 30 seconds with his feet, has perfect recall, speaks many languages including Japanese and besides being a voracious reader, he is a student of history. He knows as much as Neal, if not more, about art history and legends surrounding objects d’art.
He makes contacts and friends almost everywhere he goes. When Mozzie was shot, all Neal had to say to the grifter community was that it was for Mozzie and they all rallied and found the man that shot him. That isn’t to say that Mozzie doesn’t have enemies, he does. You can’t be a con man and not have them, but he has a charm about him that can be disarming that allows animosity to be put aside for pragmatism. Sometimes.
