TVD 3x14: We're going down, down, down, together.

Holy hell. I don't even know what to do with this episode. We all knew this was going to be a bit of a ride, because in Mystic Falls formal wear is code for important events. But man, this was a fun episode. In a totally trippy, none of this makes any sense but I'm in love with how miserable everyone is sort of way. THIS FUCKING SHOW IS THE ( Read more... )

This was the first episode in which I saw why some people ship Elijah/Elena, but, like you, I think she has more than enough vampire love interests.

his is one of those moments when I can't focus on what's happening in the scene, because all I can think of is, HOW do all these people know this dance?

I feel like I'm the only person in fandom who wasn't ??? over this. I think the reason why everyone in Mystic Falls knows how to dance is because they do this kinda crap every week, LOL. Think about how many of these kinds of events we've seen and just imagine them happening continuously like that for 18 years. I'm sure they've all been to a dance like this before. (I mean, Elena even had a dress just hanging in her closet, apparently? ;P)

But him letting her follow through on her own (often idiotic) plans wasn't about him trusting her. So when that was suddenly supposed to be a big theme in the Stefan/Elena relationship, I found it jarring. Not that I'm condoning Damon's behavior either. He is very caveman-ish about it all (Rebekah is, as always, correct), and it's problematic. But Stefan's attitude is and was problematic as well.

I agree with this 100%. Stefan letting Elena make her own choices, IMO, was always about Stefan needing to be the perfect boyfriend. And, right now, it's all about Stefan needing to be the guy who is willing to do anything to kill Klaus. His cooperation has nothing to do with her, so the Damon vs. Stefan thing going on in this episode REALLY bugged me.

One more curiosity: when Esther says she wants to undo the evil she created, does she mean she wants to kill Klaus and the Originals, or does she want to undo the existence of ALL vampires?

This was my IMMEDIATE concern. I thought about how careful and literal Elijah is when he speaks, and I just REALLY wish that Elena had taken a moment to think before she made her decision. I would not be surprised at all if Esther's kill-all-vampires secret motive is a future twist.

Elena realizes pretty immediately what she's done, and she backtracks, because even after this brief moment of honesty/cruelty, she's still Elena. She says she didn't mean it, and here's where I really love this scene. True, she doesn't entirely mean it, and she certainly does and will continue to regret the crushing blow she just dealt Damon. But part of her - that part of her who orders Stefan to snap Damon's neck, who lies to Elijah's face, who stakes Rebekah in the back, that part of her that inspired her to say these words in the first place - that part means it all. Elena is tired of being loved by Damon. It is the most exhausting thing in the world to be loved with that intensity. Elena is hurting because of how much she's hurting Damon just by not being able to love him like he loves her, and it isn't fair, because no one loves like Damon. So Elena is faltering under the weight of it all, and a bit of her genuinely hates him for loving her like that.

After last night's episode, this is the only thing I've read anywhere that's been successful in making me feel anything other than anger towards Elena (no matter how hard the writer has tried). So, thank you. Beautifully put. I'm still upset with her (over pretty much every single thing she did this week), but I finally have a motive for what she said to Damon that I can sympathize with.

Your insights into Damon's psyche (and Elena's) are so refreshing and voice a lot of things that I've been too frustrated to say myself.

So, basically, fuck this scene. It has me feeling ALL THE EMOTIONS. I hate it, and I want to watch it over and over again, because I am a masochist.

So, yeah. THIS.

And what you said about Rebekah and Damon/Rebekah. I can't even. Just, YES.

Basically, Rebekah is the best, and Damon is the hottest. That is all. ;)

Yeah, this episode was the first time I felt any sort of chemistry between Elena and Elijah. But nothing will shake me from D/E, unfortunately. #my curse to bear

Elena even had a dress just hanging in her closet, apparently?

LOL, RIGHT?

Stefan letting Elena make her own choices, IMO, was always about Stefan needing to be the perfect boyfriend.

Yes, exactly. I understand why Elena might not get this, but I need to know that the show understands this.

I would not be surprised at all if Esther's kill-all-vampires secret motive is a future twist.

It seems a lot of people on my flist agree with us (I have a smart flist. :D ). Elena never really thinks through her heroic plans enough, but she REALLY should have asked more questions.

I'm so glad what I said about Elena resonated with you. I completely understand why so much of fandom is furious at Elena, but I found her behavior to be extraordinarily consistent with her character as I understand her, especially at this point. She's at a breaking point, and lashing out at Damon is exactly how she would deal with all the strain she's under.

I spend so much of my time thinking about Damon and Elena, so I'm very pleased you get where I'm coming from. I'm beginning to think that psychoanalyzing these characters is my job. ;)

Basically, Rebekah is the best, and Damon is the hottest.

TRUE STATEMENT IS TRUE. Is it Thursday yet?
