So I may or may not have spent the last week getting super into Criminal Minds.
I know, I know! Late to the party! Late to every party! But I really love having a large canon to take from. I love being able to work my way through five seasons (six seasons!) and texting my girlfriend at great length about all of the shippy bits and even. Even ignoring that? This is hands-down the best-written procedural I've ever seen.
I've seen a good deal of Castle, a bunch of Bones, some NCIS, some CSI and Law and Order: SVU. They're all pretty great in their own ways! And as a whole, I like procedurals. Sometimes the crimes freak me out, but that's because I'm a weenie. But they are, as a format, extremely formulaic. I get burnt out, and there need to be excellent reasons for me to keep paying attention.
Well, there are. First and foremost: Characters. I can honestly say that there is not a single character in this show that I don't love with all my heart. Sure, I have favorites (Reid! Gideon! Hotch! Morgan! Garcia! uh I will keep going forever) but I literally love ALL of them.
Second: Writing. The writing of this show is incredible. I don't cry too easily about fictional things (unless they're very specific things and I'm with Chiara), but Criminal Minds can make me sob for characters that I hadn't even met at the beginning of the episode (I'm looking at you, Riding The Lightning). And it's still only the first season, though I am so close to finishing.
Third: Ambiguous morals. REALLY FUCKING GOOD ambiguous morals. Jesus. Listen: If you ever write a serious procedural? This is absolutely a necessary component. Yeah? Yeah.
Fourth: Relationships. And I don't mean 'shippy things, that's separate. I mean the mentorship of Reid by Gideon. I mean the way Elle and Morgan can go on road trips and snipe at each other like siblings. I mean the adorable flirting between Garcia and everyone, but especially Morgan. I mean how Elle called Gideon "Dad" for awhile and it felt so true. I mean how Hotch teaches Reid to shoot and knows he knows the plan, understands the deception with only a glance. I mean, I mean, I mean.
Fifth! And you should note how far down the list this is: Morgan/Reid Morgan/Reid Morgan/Reid Morgan/Reid
The POINT IS, I might or might not have nearly 5,000 words of slow-building Morgan/Reid Case!fic in google documents right now.
Feels good to be writing again, man.
what i'm writing these days,
