Day 01: Your favorite song
Day 02 : Your favorite movie

That is, without a doubt, The Prestige.

I have, I admit, doubted it, once in a while. I'll see other movies that I think I might like better, just a smidge more than this, and then...well. I watch it again, and it's all over.

My brother first described it to me as "Batman and Wolverine in a magic fight, with Nikola Tesla played by David Bowie". And while the movie that brought to mind was freaking awesome and hilarious, it was not this movie. This movie is a gorgeous, heartbreaking, fascinating tale of intrigue and sacrifice and obsession. It is incredibly well written, amazingly well-acted, the costumes blow me away...every part of it is kind of my favorite thing about it.

It's the kind of thing that I love that I have no desire at all to join the fandom for. I think there are two ways for me to love a thing: for me to love the world of a thing, the generalities of it, for me to want to know everything about it, fill in the blanks that the original creators just couldn't possibly for the sake of time or energy or organized storytelling. This is the way I love Supernatural, the way I love Star Trek, the way I love any of my fandoms.

And then there's me loving something as..what it is. As a piece of art as well as a window into a world. This is the way that I love The Prestige. It is a complete, beautiful, whole thing. To add anything, to twist anything around in the interests of slash (which I have no doubt I could if I tried), to change even one scene with an alternate interpretation of a character's thoughts....would be to ruin it. There is nothing beyond what they show me that I want to know, because they show me what they show me with a perfect, calculating reason that I envy so much as a storyteller.

And David Bowie will surprise you - he is a damn fine actor. ...Of course, it doesn't help that I have an ENORMOUS historical crush on Nikola Tesla, oh my goodness you guys this man.

(Also, Jesus Christ, I hadn't watched the trailer maybe EVER and that thing gave me freaking SHIVERS. I love this movie SO MUCH)
