On the one hand - BLATANT homoerotic tension between Holmes and Watson? Fuck yes. Robert Downey Junior and Jude Law? Yes, please. Excellent costuming? Check check check! A NOT-FAT, NOT-BUMBLING, INTELLIGENT WATSON? HELL. YES.
On the other....is that magic I see? Can't be. And it seems to be kind of, um, marketed less as a mystery and more as an action thriller. Which is...Hmmm. Alright, I suppose. It's not as if there wasn't any action, in the books (heh). But I'll have to see how they handle it.
Irene Adler is a plus, too. I always liked her. I just hope they don't push the emotional pieces of Holmes/Adler, because there...weren't any. He respects her. He might even like her. And maybe he had sex with her. But I don't even need a tinhat to know that the closest Sherlock Holmes had to love was Watson.
EDIT: I've figured out my problem with it. Watson is way too cheeky. It is hard for me to imagine the Dr. John Watson of the books saying any of the lines that Watson does here - quite impossible for me to imagine him hitting Holmes in the face. I understand the appeal of this - especially since modern-day male friendships are based so much on mockery and banter - and I think I'll like the movie (anything with that much blatant gay flirting and explosions, I'll take as a win).
But it's not about my Holmes, and it's not about my Watson. Hollywood can't make a movie about them, because by the standards of most cinema audiences they're...boring. They respect one another, they love one another, but it's all in the subtleties between them that show their true relationship. On the surface they are predictable, formulaic and stodgy. A movie that truly captures them would need to be very slow-paced, narrated, and made by an independent filmmaker.
Also, I'm wondering what the hell case this is based off, if it's based off any one in particular. The hints of actual magic are kind of upsetting. If Irene Adler is in it, it should be A Scandal In Bohemia, but there's no sign of Mary Morstan or of Watson being married, and there's certainly no sign of the King of Bohemia or safes and portraits.. Hrrm. I don't know, I don't know.
