in the target: women case, i'll use an example from above. there's a recent one where she makes these weird jokes about trying to wed al roker. and part of what makes them funny is this weird, self-consciousness of telling it - like, it needs her personality + al roker's personality to make sense. i think mike myers uses this kind of humor all the time. like, austin powers isn't funny because he's a satire of 60's spy movies, he's funny because the idea of mike myers in a 60's spy movie is funny (sometimes).
this kinda applies to acting too. like, do i love warren oates because he's a master thespian, or do i love warren oates because there's something about his character that makes sense in the roles he chooses? i think it's more of the latter.
