10. bridget st. john’s album thank you for is the perfect record for the month of november. it’s the album equivalent of a comfortable sweater-it’s warm, but most appropriately brought out when it’s busy getting cold outside.
#8 - I really want to see The Uninvited and your post reminded me to get to it.
#7 - John Bolton scares me (or maybe it's his facial hair?) and I'm glad he's looking for another job.
#5 - I really enjoyed The Dreamers and found it romantic, fun and *gasp* even thoughtful. I've read plenty of reviews where critics say similar things that you have (I can barely remember Eva's boobs in The Dreamers) but I just didn't see the movie in that light at all. I find it fascinating that so many others did. Anyways... we've been babbling about the new Bond flick a lot and I'm looking forward to checking it out sooner or later.
#4 - I've never been a big Sasha Cohen fan. Comedy at the expense of others (unless it's big mouth politicians on The Daily Show/Colbert show) doesn't really float my boat and my desire to see Borat is basically nil. I'm kind of amazed by the amount of attention the movie has been getting and after reading that article my interest in Borat went from nil to a solid never. I think people's ignorance about other cultures, other people, etc. is one of the worlds big problems. There seems to be a real lack of empathy & understanding today that probably gets celebrated by stuff like Borat, but then again maybe young people today have to be able to laugh at something to have any kind of empathy or understanding towards it and I don't fault them for that much. The dumbing down of society is happening at a rapid rate though. Hell, I'm part od the WTF? Japan community on lj and I enjoy laughing at their oddities. Since I'm married to a full-blooded Latvian who is a 1st gen American that speaks Latvian fluidly and spent almost 7 years living in the Middle East. I feel like I live in another world most of the time that most Americans are clueless about anyway. You'd probably be horrified by the ignorant comments I've gotten regarding Latvians and Latvian culture, etc.
i hope my little synopsis about the uninvited didn't imply that, like, it's a horror movie that's secretly an art movie or something. it's both in the best of ways. sorta like hitchcock, once again, in that the philosophical side of it is really well tailored to the movie side of it. i think you'll really dig it actually. it's also one of murdermystery's faves, if i'm not mistaken... so certainly heed his advice as well!
a lot of people i like were into the dreamers. i think part of it is that i'm a little bored with controversial sex. it never seems controversial to me. plus i kinda hate that michael pitt character, even though i loved last days.
i think part of the problem with the whole borat thing (and again, i haven't seen it) is that people in america assume that if the people parodied are white than anything is fair game. which shows a real ignorance of class relations, as far as i'm concerned (not to mention a complete indifference to what the post-soviet situation looks like, etc.). i can only imagine what gets said about latvian culture... you have my sympathy, obviously.
i haven't had much time for lj i guessdanschankDecember 13 2006, 05:49:51 UTC
i can't totally redeem bertolucci, unfortunately. the conformist is worth a look and is visually beautiful i guess, but i LIKED it rather than LOVED it, and things irritated me about it too.
i also totally hate last tango in paris, but a lot of people swear up and down about that one too. i dunno... supposedly he made some film about incest in the late seventies that's worth a look. i'm not holdin my breath though.
haven't seen mysterious skin. i hear it's good though. i sorta like gregg araki. i liked nowhere. i hear skin is more serious though.
