Really, I really rescued a hummingbird.....
I could have left it there, you know, the whole 'circle of life' routine.....but i just couldn't do it.
I was coming back from my morning walk on my work break, when a man that i recognized from my work building pointed to a bird. It was a little hummingbird just sitting on the ground by the flowers. He was beautiful! The man asked me if i could do anything about it. He didn't want to leave it alone, but had to get back to work. I took a picture of the little guy and posted it on my facebook. This is a time that i love having so many friends on my facebook. I asked my friends, what should i do. Many had good recommendations. I told the guy that i'd take care of it.
I went up to my desk and called a local Wildlife rescue. They told me they would take it in. So, into the breakroom i go to find a box. Then, outside i tried to capture the little guy. He would flap his little wings but was only able to hop. I didn't want to hurt him by scooping him in the box, so i gently picked him up and placed him in it. Then, i did what every little kid does when they capture something, i put some flowers and mulch in the box so he'd feel at 'home'. Like that really works, but it made me feel like i was trying. i had this sense that i should just leave him alone, i could be taking him away from family. But, with the condition he was in, he'd be eaten or die of dehydration before nightfall.
So, in the box he went with his little flowers and mulch.
Then, i stopped by the break room and cut down a coffee cup for him and made some sugar water. Went to my desk and placed the little bowl of water in there for him.
He seemed ok each time i checked on him. i don't know if he drank any water, but he did perch on the makeshift dish and start at me each time i peeked in the box.
Then, a friend of mine from facebook wrote me and said he was on his way to pick up the little guy. He'd take him home and nurse him back to health. He was coming with a little cage.
When he showed up, we placed the bird in the cage with his water. He looked fine. Nice and plump and had a good look to him. (as if i know what hummingbirds are supposed to look like if they are healthy) ...i told my friend that i had called the wildlife rescue and they would take the beauty in. So, that's where my friend headed.
i feel like i did a good deed today. i can't wait to see that office worker again and let him know what i did. He'll be so relieved. He really wanted to help but didn't know how.
